CHAPTER 12

Jason walked into the restaurant, Ryan in tow. Adam and Ryan had been texting. Jason was nervous, but wanted to remain composed. He was no longer upset over what Derek had done in the hospital, mainly because it probably had helped. Jason just wanted his best friend back. Ryan nudged him and said, "Over there."

Composure thrown aside, Jason raced over to the two Roy brothers. He spun Derek around in his chair, launching himself on the forward. Adam quickly grabbed Derek's coffee from his hand before it spilled. Ryan reached over, taking it from Adam and sat down, sipping it. Derek pulled back and smiled, although it didn't reach his eyes, "Miss me?"

"You're an asshole." Jason said, smiling.

"How'd you find me?" Derek said, eyebrows creased.

"Your brother. And you're still an asshole." Jason sat down, hand gripping Derek's shoulder.

Derek looked down, wringing his hands, "I'm sorry I left... but... it was good, you know?"

"Derek," Jason started, "I would've been there for you."

Shaking his head, Derek said, "No... you couldn't. You weren't. I don't blame you. I should have been there for you, but wasn't. I try to watch out for you-"

"You don't have to watch over me." Jason interrupted, "You're not losing anyone else."

Derek looked into Jason's face and nodded, "Yeah...Yeah, I think I know that now."

Ryan cleared his throat, breaking in, "You know, Lindy is going to kill you, Roysie, but I got you some time. Tonight, you've got to be back. There's a flight in two hours."

Derek looked between his friends and then his brother. He sighed, going over the few days spent in Ottawa with family. He had spent a lot of it with his brother, talking. He finally shared with his parents about his past. He knew it would take them a few days to accept it, but in the end, they had said that they loved him. Derek began to feel normal again. "I'm ready, guys. I'm sorry."

Jason looked down, "Me too."

Ryan grinned, "And Me three. Didn't want to feel left out."

It was a nice laugh to break up the harsh atmosphere, the uncomfortable mood. Nudging his brother, Adam said, "You've got anything you'd like to show?"

Derek looked into his brother's face, his own countenance dropping. He pulled up his sleeve, flipping his arm towards Jason. Jason grinned as he saw initials on the inside of his wrist. "It's not anything big," Derek said,"because, well... Petr hated complicated things. I think... I think I need to have him with me all the time."

Adam nodded, "And it is good closure, right? Finally?"

Noting that Adam's statement sounded more like a plea, Derek said, "Yeah... I... it's hard, but yeah. I just want to say goodbye in person."

The group stood up, Derek paying. Jason said, clapping Derek on the shoulder, "Let's go visit Petr's grave, then head home."

Nodding, Derek looked at the table, "Hey... where's my coffee...?"

Arriving home, Jason threw his small bag into the corner. Things were alright, but he was still a bit exhausted. Derek would struggle for some time, but it seemed like he was at least stumbling in the right direction. Jason cupped his hands and yelled, "Zee? Which room are you in?"

When there was no response, Jason rolled his eyes, walking into the kitchen. He knew that Zdeno would try to go out, even in his condition. He was stubborn, and Jason couldn't blame him. Jason had just wanted to be in his arms as soon as he walked in the door.

Jason walked to the kitchen table and saw a note. He picked it up, reading it.

Jason-

I'm sorry that I left like this. I think, with the problems I have caused, that I should return to Boston. It is better this way. Don't be upset, Little One. I will call you soon, once I resettle. I'll miss you. I love you. Take care of Derek and your team.
