The EMG Experience

No, this isn't some trendy new band, but a medical test I had today. I had a lot of anxiety about this test, since it involves needles.

The skin over the areas to be tested is cleaned with a special soap. A needle electrode that is attached by wires to a recording machine is inserted into a specific muscle ( Read more... )

The first part sounds like Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV). I've always had NCV *and* EMG--never one or the other. They seem to go hand in hand.

the needles didn't bother me- I've been stabbed with needles so much in the past few years trying to get a diagnosis.

It was the actual stimulation that had me screaming in pain- I jerked off the table at least three times. I hated myself for being so weak, and i hurt for nearly two weeks afterwards =(

Thank you for posting this! I freak out anytime I have to have some type of test (like a needle biopsy on my thyroid on friday /shudder) so even though I don't have one of these coming up anytime soon, it's nice to know the details if/when I have to have one!

I've had the needle biopsy on my thyroid. Well, they were nodules on my thyroid. The best advice I can give you, is mind over matter. When you think you can't take it anymore, take yourself somewhere else & remember to breath. It's not a fun experience...

Wishing you all the best. *gentle hugs*

I had just the needle jabbing one on my legs and boy did it hurt me, both the jab and the electrical impulse, but then my legs, especially my lower legs, are quite bony too.

Icon Love!!! i'm sooooo going to miss David Tennant as Dr Who! Wah! my husband is Australian and he got me so hooked on the show that i can't wait for the next episode to make it to the US. Hubby has downloaded all of the Chris and David ones for me, along with the other show, which i'm having a Fibro Fog moment and can't think of it...No! Wait...Torchwood! Geesh. Anyway, i just love your icon!

Thanks! It's my default that goes with my layout :D
I've been a fan since I was a kid, I used to watch Tom Baker, the Forth Doctor, in the late 70's and I love Chris and David too! I am not looking forward to the regen either. I love Torchwood too.

(sorry to the OP, no more derailing the thread... >_<)

i went through that several years ago but do remember how funny it felt when my muscles reacted to each electrical shock! i felt embarrassed, of all things! All in all, it was an interesting experience!

i need to have another one done and am going to mention it to my doctor the next time i see him. i've noticed that my arms are getting weaker and i can't even hold my grandson without feeling like i'm about to drop him! i'm also going to ask to have my legs tested as i am starting to trip quite a bit. i hate when that happens! So, thanks for posting this as it's turned out to be a good reminder for me to discuss with my doctor!
