Just an FYI. I've been called back to participate in the recently mentioned Fibro study. It's a 15 week study with either a placebo or a medication. It includes medical care etc with a 275 dollar payment at the end. I've been told I would need to be weened off my Topomax and quit using my Naproxen (an anti-inflammatory I use for endomtriosis ( Read more... )

Then you're using caution. Glad it's working for you, but it's not something I will ever take. I just don't want folks going in to this survey ill advised.

I have also been chosen through screening to participate in this study. Still don't know if I'm going to actually do it though but I'm going back for visit three next week.

No, I agree with you; I'd be very leary of it. On a totally different note; your icon made my morning!

Just offering up my little word of warning. It was either that or make a snarky Aqua Dots for Fibro cross reference.

Thanks! :)

I just finished the Xyrem study. It didn't really help me a whole lot, but that's not to say it won't work.
There is really no need to fear GHB overdosing. The doses "club kids" use on each other is anywhere from 18g to 120g. The theraputic dose is 2.25g to 4.5g. And let me tell you, the Xyrem tastes like crap, so you would have a really really hard time ODing on it. Taking it as directed will not cause problems. Not taking it as directed will get you kicked out of the study. Xyrem is also not addictive, so there is little chance of getting "hooked".

:) Xyrem does contain GHB...which is both physically and emotionally addictive. When I asked the woman speaking with me on the phone (who confirmed that it WAS addictive when asked) how Omega would deal with this possibility, she said they would wean people off the drug or *chipper* offer it to folks for a year if they "liked" the medication. This didn't really ease my concern ( ... )

I am aware that Xryem contains GHB, I am sorry if I implied differently. Everything I've read (Both on my own, and the information provided to me by the research group) says that proper useage of Xyrem does not lead to addiction. They did not wean me off of it, and I've had no adverse side effects (My study ended Tuesday). I've not craved or missed the meds. I've had no trouble sleeping since I stopped taking it either.
Xyrem is not a "pain" medication. It is a sedative, designed to help ensure good, restful sleep, so the body has a chance to heal and feel better. It is only taken at night, at bed time (and then again 2.5 to 4 hours later).
I'm not trying to push anyone into this study, like I said, it didn't work very well for me, so I am not a good spokesperson for it. I just want to show another side of the picture you are portraying. Not trying to cause problems at all.
BTW - Who/what is Omega? Is that the group conducting the research study in your area?

. . . did they lower the payment? When I participated in the study last year, they were offering around $600 for completion of the study, or $50 for every visit you made if you dropped early.

I dropped early because it wasn't doing anything (pretty sure I was on the placebo) and waking myself up in the middle of the night for the second dose was driving me crazy. But I still made around $500.

And regarding anti-depressants, they wouldn't let you take those on any of these clinical trials anyway. They usually wean you off of all medications so that they know exactly what the study medication is doing, and limit you to Tylenol for rescue medication.
