Wow, for those that haven't seen the Facebook post, an article in today's NY Times mentions that in order to save money, the University of California Santa Cruz campus is cutting the minor in music and the bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences. It doesn't seem to be reflected on the department website yet, but it kind of shocks me. I mean, it was ( Read more... )

Sorry, guey. Apparently some folks at UCSD who want to believe that their institution is the equivalent to Cal or UCLA have signed a statement trying to get UCR, UCSC, and UCM regeared as teaching universities and deemphasizing their research faculty or shut them down entirely. (I found this on the FB of a research faculty friend at UCSC.)

So is "Earth Sciences" = "Geology", so it is a subset of the Geology department? Either way, it sucks.

Yeah, at Santa Cruz, if you want a geology degree, you get a BS/BA in Earth Sciences. If you are scared of math/physics/chemistry, you get a BA in Environmental Studies, which has a few geology classes and some policy stuff (and a few bio classes, I think). There is no "geology" degree, as such. It looks like they still have the graduate program, but no undergrad major for geologists. And our program was pretty good when I went there. Jerkfaces.
