Who'd have thought the plainest, dullest entrant in the whole CID Hallowe'en party would have had such a startling effect on Gene. He'd gaped as if Tempest Storm had walked in, not little Annie Cartwright in a nun costume. For the whole hour they'd been at the party he hadn't stopped staring and, oddly enough, the more flustered she'd become under his scrutiny the wilder he'd seemed to get. Annie'd known Gene was an intense lover but the look on his face during that hour at the Arms had been almost fear. He'd been afraid to get too close to her. Annie'd smiled privately; she'd known how she was going to play it.
Gene hadn't spoken at all on the drive home. She might've though he was furious with her if she hadn't known him better. Six months earlier she'd have missed the scent of his arousal, she wouldn't have seen that he was gripping the wheel so tightly to keep his hands off her.
He had her against the bedroom door. She'd gasped and whimpered softly, much more quietly than was the norm for her. She'd carefully gone for 'surprise ( ... )
