THE FANDOM HIGHTIMES: EIGHTEENTH ISSUE!

CHLOE SPEAKS:
On behalf of my staff, I apologize for the reduced state of this week's issue. As anyone who's been listening to the radio knows, it's been a rough week for a lot of people. Thanks for understanding.

PHOEBE SPEAKS:
I've written a lot of different topics for this column during the last school year. Some of them have been amusing, some of them have been sad or painful. They've all been written for a reason.

This week, I want to talk about justice and the miscarriage thereof.

I was brought up believing that our justice system was a fair and just one, hence the name. I was taught that everyone is innocent until proven guilty and that everyone, no matter what you are accused of has certain rights. We have a right to know our accuser and we have the right to certain things to guarantee that we are not unjustly prosecuted for things and actions that we may be accused of.

Imagine my surprise to find out that apparently, it isn't the case for all people and justice doesn't seem to create everybody equally.

To be held without a shred of any kind of evidence that you have done something is beyond a travesty, it is a miscarriage of justice that people try so hard to teach each other. The burden of proof is supposed to be on the accuser, not on the accused. We're supposed to work on proving guilt so that justice can be served, not the other way around.

When your only proof is an eyewitness to something, there is a large flaw in that. Humans and creatures are flawed. Our eyes can trick our brains into believing something that isn't right. It has been proven many times that eyewitness testimonies are notoriously unreliable.

Yet, that was the only evidence the law had to hold the accused.

It bothers me that it appears that all that needs to happen is that someone accuse you of something and you're screwed, whether you did it or not.

Maybe that's not true everywhere and in every case, but it was certainly true this week.

STUDENT COUNCIL ROUNDUP
compiled by Peter Parker

- The logistics for April 22nd's prom were discussed. Specifically, the crowns, a location, and where to get a band were discussed.

- Remember, Poker Night is this Saturday and Trivia Night is later this month.

- That's it. It was a light week.

The Mountie is hot.

[And really, what else needs to be said? I do have to make one more addition to this though. Do you know who else is hot? Xander Harris and Bridge Carson. Together. Planning a date, apparently? Well done, boys, well done. --Chloe]
