"I'll probably never be at the lodge again either," Atton said mournfully. "You have any idea how great that lodge is?"

Sure, he could leave and go back, but he didn't actually feel like it.

Apparently Sia really liked getting to explore somewhere new that didn't involve having to know what the loyalty was of the people there or care whether an attack was likely. Who knew.

"Is that your official opinion?" Atton asked. "You know what, I'm not going to argue with you about it."

That was a novel idea.

"Let's just look around and see if there's actually really a reason we bothered to come here."

"Yeah, well, it's what, an hour back to the lodge?" Atton asked. "If we start arguing about this now, we won't be done in time to start arguing about whether we should take the slow path back."

"That's tactics, right?" Atton said, and maybe the slight swaggering arrogance he added to that statement was on purpose.

"Well, I have one of those," Atton said, walking along. "I'm not Cade."

"I have no idea how he functions." She wished she did. It would certainly make her life easier.

"He's a stoopa who's running away real hard from something, so he doesn't give a damn about much," Atton said. "Not real hard to work out."

Quite possibly because that was his MO, too. He just happened to be somewhat smarter than Cade.

"But why court trouble?" she asked, thinking back to her last conversation with Cade. It wasn't like she'd had a lot of those, since she actively tried to avoid him now.

Atton shrugged. "Maybe he's just not overly interested in the matter of whether he lives or dies," he said. "Maybe the adrenaline works for him. I don't know."
