St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon

But for anyone who actually wanted to get out of the hotel, there was plenty to do today. The morning program for Fandom was filled with an introductory look at the Habitat for Humanity housing project they'd be working on all week. It was a little out of the city center, on an abandoned plot the local chapter had found. Some of the houses were ( Read more... )

This large plot is already a big source of activity. Some of the houses are practically up and ready to go; in other places, foundations have only just been put down.

Fandom High volunteers won't be allowed to work with heavy machinery, but that doesn't mean there isn't help needed everywhere, so orient yourself and get to it!

"All around do-gooder," Kate quipped, curling a small grin. "Cute."

"I'll trust you on this one," she decided, turning her wood into a leaning post. "What's your sort of night on the town?"

"Around here it's mostly bars, clubs, and live music, if any of that catches your interest," Bruce said. "Otherwise, there's always the not very scary haunted hike."

"I get enough of that at home anyway." Kate shrugged mildly and twitched a smirk. "Every hike is a monster filled hike. It gets kind of old."

"We can wander and see what calls us," she suggested. "Or are you one of those has to have everything planned to the last detail?"

"I'm fine with spontaneity," Bruce said, showing a grin "And anyone who claims otherwise is mistaken."

Just because he preferred to have everything planned out didn't mean he know how to improvise, after all. No matter what any Robins might think.

"Do you get a few people who do?" she guessed, looking amused. It was sort of implied.

"On occasion," Bruce said. "But they just don't usually get to see that side of me."

Kate exhaled a short laugh. "What did I do to get to?" Or, at some point possibly get to, anyway.

"I'm not sure yet. Call it a hunch, but I'm confident it'll end up being a good idea," Bruce said.

Given a choice, Cara preferred to have something that would tax her muscles, so hauling around timber it was.

Ben was totally not stalking Ender looking for something he wouldn't have to think too hard about doing, and lifting boards was something he could almost do in his sleep thanks to years and years (and years...) of Jedi training, which was weirdly rock-and-stick lifting intensive.

He was using his arms when people were looking, of course (he didn't spend all of the time at the gym just standing around), but he was also holding up more than most people could. Hopefully the supervisors weren't watching too carefully...

If there was anything on this project that was suited for Puck's musculature, it was this. It was easy for him to haul around large pieces of wood (insert your own joke here), and he felt fairly at home.

Which worried him, as far as his eventual job prospects went.

Tara wasn't exactly strong, but there were some parts of the framework that were more about balancing things and hammering them together than sheer brute force. She thought she could do that.

A few minutes later, she was sitting on the sidelines and sucking on her thumb. Hammering worked better when you didn't smash your fingertips.

"Ow," Ben said, smiling sympathetically.

Tara took the thumb out of her mouth and carefully prodded at it with her index finger. Not broken, just a little smashed.

"Would you believe me if I said it was a rogue hammer?" she asked.

"Just hopping around, waiting to bash people's fingers?" Ben grinned. "If we were on the island, yeah."
