Someday, there would be a clear evening in St. John's. Today was not that day - or that night. (Spoiler: tomorrow might be.) The rain was light, though, the temperature in the mid-40's for you Fahrenheit-speaking heathens, and around 7°C for normal people ( Read more... )

George Street is still the place to be if you care to hit the pubs or clubs and catch some live music.

If you're looking to watch something a little more athletic than a bunch of Newfies lifting pints when it isn't their turn to play, the Festival of New Dance opens tonight at the Longshoremen's Protective Union Hall, featuring Governor General’s Award winner for Lifetime Achievement Margie Gillis, established local favorite Sarah Joy Stoker, and the exciting emerging choreography of Lynn Panting.

Yesterday Annie and Rilla had decided that they should find where the dancing was. They were maybe not prepared for the clerk at the spa to direct them to a place where there was Latin dancing. Oops.

"Uh," Annie said when she saw the inside. "So this is... interesting?"

"Where are the rest of their clothes?" Rilla asked in a strangled voice.

"I think at home," Annie said slowly. "If not still at the store, completely unbought..."

Rilla covered her eyes with one hand. "This isn't the kind of dancing I'm used to."

No kidding, Rilla.

'Well, it's... it's... you know, festive," Annie tried. "And they're really good at it. See, I would have torn my hamstring doing what that girl just did"

"I'm wondering if the one over there is going to put her partner's eye out with her high heeled slipper," Rilla murmured.

"It's kind of a great shoe," Annie said, tilting her head slightly. "I mean, nothing I would wear, but that's not the point."

"I'm sure you could kill a lot of robot spiders with that shoe," Rilla offered, "and it makes her legs look wonderful."

It wouldn't be Rilla if she didn't add, "And we can see all of it."

"I wonder if I could wear those..." she said thoughtfully.

This was going to lead to a sprained ankle.

Rilla tilted her head appraisingly. "Maybe. Should we go ask where she found them?"

"No," Annie said quickly. "I don't want to bother her... Do you think she'd mind?"

"Would you mind if someone came over and told you that they loved your shoes?" Rilla replied.

Annie once told a cheerleader she liked her shoes and the cheerleader stopped wearing them after that.

"I don't know. It's never happened before," said Annie. She took a deep breath and said, "Okay, going to go ask."

"She'll be nice," Rilla said encouragingly. "We're in Canada!"

"Right," Annie said, squaring her shoulders to walk up to the woman and ask. The woman was probably questioning her shoe choice if someone who very obviously looked seventeen liked her fashion style, but a moment later, Annie came back proud and smiling. "I got the name of the store. Maybe there's a field trip in store this week."

If she could actually work herself up to even looking at the shoes, let along buying them.
