To be honest, I was hoping for a visit to the Far East. Tenzen's homeland, Phoenix, and all that. The hypothetical Rise of Phoenix expansion seems more interesting than this.
Then again, it's not like there is a lot of information about the upcoming expansion yet.
Unimpressed so far. All the time they've spent screwing up the game over the last year or two, this feels kind of too little, too late. Wings killed it for me. For as pretty as the cutscenes were, it was chock full of some of the most trite concepts and worst characters in the history of the franchise. 14 is a better game at this point, and it will take pulling off something truly impressive in a 10 year old MMO to pique my interest. I don't think throwing in new jobs will do it, and the locations don't look like anything we haven't seen before.
This is going to come across snarky, and I don't really mean it to, but I can't believe that FFXI has lasted 10 years and has enough players to justify a new expansion. With all the MMOs that have come and gone in that time, and the fact that FFXI doesn't have great graphics, it just boggles my mind that it's still going.
I quit about 3 years ago, myself, and while I miss the community, the auto-translate, and the distinct lack of trolls (does that still hold true?) I couldn't imagine going back to a game that looks so.... bad... :(
Well...graphics isn't everything. The only reason I'm not playing X-COM on Steam right now is because I don't want to forget to eat and sleep for a weekend. And that came out in 1994 or something.
On the other hand, I feel the same way about real-life. It looks so bad sometimes. Not to mention the physics model is occasionally...questionable. And let's face it, the textures aren't all that.
Anyone else of the opinion that these two new jobs will absolutely suck? Not because the jobs themselves are bad, but because everyone's going to unlock them, PL-rush them to 30, then Abyssea them to 99 just to say they have them. In other words, no one's going to know how to properly play these two jobs, because no one will put the effort into learning them.
Like everyone else, I've quit awhile ago and this doesn't give me any reason to return.
I am worried that the jobs themselves may be bad. I am not sure how SE can create yet another mage job that doesn't overlap one of the existing ones, especially with scholars already being partial geomancers. I am not sure the design space is there.
As for people rushing to the new jobs and playing them badly...well, people always do that. It's necessary, in a way. When ninja came out, people thought it was going to be an enfeebling DD so there were NIN/BLMs running around. It sounds dumb now, but figuring out what's stupid is an important learning process.
You missed the point I was making. There's a difference between 'playing in a party and learning' like the NIN/BLMs did and 'sitting in the back row while your PL keeps everyone alive'. People wont get rid of said player because he has a PL, even more so when there's no healer seeking. And thanks to PL, he wont really learn the ins/outs of the job and will just do whatever he feels like doing, if he actually does anything, that is.Then he dings 30. Then he joins his LS/pickup party and keywhores and/or continues to do nothing while they rake in his EXP and ding 99
( ... )
I don't think I missed your point. It's just that...in order to be able to play a job badly, it must be possible to play it well in the first place. And with a job like geomancer, I think the fear has to be that the job may end up being completely situational. As I said, I just don't think the design space is there. What if it's just impossible to learn the job/play the job well?
That point only holds true for geomancer, of course. The problems you described probably will happen to rune fencer (the other new job, apparently).
Me, I'm still around and going..HEY there SE, finally! I don't care much about the new jobs, but new places to explore and more story really make me grin.
If I level either, it'll be my way; slow, the way some would consider tedious and just enjoy the journey.
Unfortunately we don't know much yet. I just wanna see how this turns out.
Prolly because I tend to be a nice person besides. Also some of them are old friends who quit. Also let's just say I don't have everyone on a FFXI filter; my lj is not just about FFXI! (Yes I got FFXI stuff on a filter.)
I tend to do the same thing, just put friends on different filters depending on what I think they'll be interested in so I don't bore non-game people with game stuff and vice versa. This account's still fairly new though.

Really, SE?
*considers coming back*
Nope. Quit more than 2 years ago, this isn't enough to lure me back. It's not my game anymore, and all my friends are playing other stuff now.
