I think you're putting a bit too much emphasis on "the American Way" It was never really that prevalent in the comic book versions of Superman. It was invented by the 40s radio series, when Superman was fighting the the Japanese and Nazis, and was pretty much dropped again until the 50s TV series (at the height of cold war paranoia.) It was dropped again until the first Christopher Reeve movie, which was the first time Superman himself ever used the phrase.

I like what you're doing with the identity issue (though I don't see why they can't just keep the Karen identity and say that's Clark's cousin or make the Linda identity similar to the parts of Karen she likes.
However, the boardinghouse where everyone sits down to meals prepared by the landlady strikes me as a part of 19th and early 20th century culture that didn't make it to the present day. I always think of The Day the Earth Stood Still. A quick google didn't find any in the U.S. (a few that call themselves boardinghouse but seem to be hotels).
Also, where is Kara getting the money for this? What will her identities say if asked what they do for a living?

According to Wikipedia B&Bs still exist in the USA. So they do in my version of the DC universe.
Clark loaned her a few hundred dollars spending monety several chapters ago, she hasn't spent much of it yet.
Karen is saying she's unemployed but looking for work (not very hard).
Linda officially spent a couple of years working (I'll be saying more about that later) and is going to go to college next year on the money she recently inherited, also several chapters ago. Meanwhile she's relaxing and living on several hundred dollars loaned her by her cousin...

Forgot to say, it has to be Linda, who has some previous existence - it's the identity Kara used the last time she was on earth, and there are e.g. school records, people who vaguely remember her, and so forth. For example, Jimmy Olsen and Lucy Lane both met her. If they met her as Karen they would know that there was some sort of deception.

Is this something I don't know about the backgrounds, or intriguing foreshadowing? (I'm guessing the latter.)
