Good money says this gets me yelled at, too.

I was going to post something like "I didn't realize everyone on ffrants was batshit insane, I should have looked at comments more closely when I was lurking," but then I realized it was kind of a silly thing to say as there's a whole other community dedicated to ranting about it ( Read more... )

I'm not going to yell at you, but I am going to laugh.

You walked into a community where people have beeing having the same damn arguments, over and over, for years. We've been through the "he's married so he's straight" argument dozens of times, and each time we've pointed out why it's stupid. The "underage sex is wrong" rant is also old, old, old.

So when we see it yet again a lot of us just don't have the inclination to disagree politely, as we might have done at first. You might call us batshit insane, but I just think we're bored.

Then why should I need to sugarcoat my opinion so I don't offend people who like yaoi/underage smut/FFX-2?

Allow me a brief moment to comment on the hypocrisy of you complaining about other people not sugarcoating their opinions while simultaneously asserting that you shouldn't have to sugarcoat your own opinions.

Okay, I'm done.

Oh, of course everyone is allowed to disagree.

It's just the big fuss that was made about "wank" and the moderator tags that lead me to believe that it's not what I'd call a common occurance.

Underage sex isn't wrong. It's just irritating.

Your brief moment has been allowed, but it still got a little nonsensical and overblown.

Except, that's not what you said in your rant.

4) Characters under sixteen, seventeen, probably shouldn't have lemons written about them.

As you've learned and several people have pointed out, it was the way you worded it.

With this lot, you really have to watch your wording. Seriously.

Welcome to the internet: you had an opinion, people don't agree.

Wanking is a slang term for masturbation, which is what we feel like people are doing in some of those posts. Drabble is a well-accepted word for a fic about 100-500 words. If you don't like them, you still need to get used to it. Also, we're fairly kind. You should see what people are like on communities whose sole purpose is to mock the stupidity of others in fandom.

Let's sit here and pretend that isn't the sole purpose of fanficrants for a while.

Well, I'm done.

If you have a problem with those kinds of communities, why are you in FFR then? oO

As for the post at hand:

I don't get where the drabble thing came in (Since that isn't only just used in FFR and is usually a term for ficlets or just small.. Well, Drabbles), but they do love a wank comment. I dunno. Maybe it makes them feel speshul that they're using an omfgsexual term? And omfg its teh brittish lololol? Like the fourteen year old kids you see snickering into their hands at words like 'Wang' or Dick or what have you.

Drabble was really just "while I'm at it."

But yeah, I do get the impression that it's an OMFGsexualterm and not everyone is privvy to knowing the meaning of it in that context. This of course makes it preferable to more accessible and accurate phrases such as "post drama."

I don't think the appeal in using a term like wank comes from the fact that it's not widely used outside of the UK. It's a mixture of shock value and simple imaturity. Who knows. I'm new to this whole thing, so maybe I'm wrong. But it sounds to me that they're just using a sexual term just for the sake of it being a sexual term- I think the fact that since a lot of people don't recognize the word, it does help them in feeling like they're not so immature and not so unlike the kids over AIM going "loloololol mastrbernashun lolololol'. However, I don't think its the sole reason for it's useage.

Frankly, I don't see why they just don't use the term Dramatic or Psycho. I have no clue how masturbation deals into the equation, which is why I just think they're using it for the sake of using it (If that makes sense)

(Sorry, that was just one of the things that made me grow very tired, very quickly, while browsing through FFR.)

We're not all batshit insane. Unfortunately there are a good number of very loud, very obnoxious children on this board. More often than not they don't know how to keep their mouths shut or to respect another person's opinion. Luckily the majority of them are children who, hopefully will grow out of it when they hit the real world.

And keep in mind, this is the only group that I know of that has another group designed specifically to rant about it (check out ffrantsrants).

Just trust that we're not all drivilling morons.

I did come away with the impression that most of the people there are petulant children.

Also, thanks for your support and level-headedness.

Y'know, it would help if I actually paid attention to which group I was posting to ... maybe I should start keeping ffrantsrants and fanficrants in different friends groups.

I have never seen people react so poorly to someone having a different opinion.

You haven't been online very much, have you?

SINGLE THEM OUT!

Comments to a post you made do not equal persecution. Please get back to us if an angry mob shows up at your journal to break the windows, urinate in your flowerbeds, and burn a giant phallic symbol on your lawn.

Yes, I've been online very much.

The only other place I've seen people that handled differing opinions so poorly was GameFAQs. Truly ridiculous.

Your reply about persecution is unrelated to what I was saying in the first place and "persecution" is an extremely strong word.

xero_sky November 18 2006, 19:05:49 UTC
It's not at all unrelated. Through the magic of hyperbole, I exaggerated your claim in order to better illustrate the absurdity of it.

You did not receive particularly harsh treatment at fanficrants. The only noteworthy aspect of the entire thing is your reaction to it, which seems to indicate a lack of experience with online communities of any sort.

In short? Boo-hoo.

I never said I recieved harsh treatment, I just said they all seem to be a bunch of petulant children. Just because you choose to steep yourself in communities where people jump at being brushed the wrong way doesn't mean I do the same. I'm used to some semblance of maturity, pardon me.

Mmm...I don't think it's so much 'having a differnt opinion' as it is taking exception to a rant touching on already wanky issues and seeing them couched in declarative statements instead of as personal opinions.

There is a difference between stating something as your opinion (and you don't even really have to say 'in my opinion', it's all in the wording) and coming across as telling people what is right and what is wrong.

Fandom at large is full of so many different and diverse elements and people, 'right' and 'wrong' are entirely subjective.

That said, sometimes people really are looking for reasons to be pissed off or insulted.

It just strikes me as completely ridiculous that there was such a big stink over it. I had expected a rant community to be mature enough to be able to handle someone saying "I really can't stand X."

Reply

toxictattoo November 18 2006, 17:17:04 UTC
[laughs] Then I say you haven't read much on fanficrants. It's pretty standard for the comm.

And my opinion? The stink over your rant isn't as bad as I've seen on that comm. It's actually very tame in comparison.

I think they would be more amenable to understanding someone saying "I really can't stand X" as simply being opinion if, as has traditionally happened in the past, the ranter wouldn't go on and on and on about how 'wrong/sick/disgusting/retarded' it was. Not saying that was what you did, in fact, you didn't. But it has happened in the past and now...they're a bit (Okay, a lot) sensitive about it.

I've said this, but I never read any of the comments, just the kind of posts that were being made. A foolish mistake!

I'll try to keep all of that in mind.
