Why is "MPREG, EEEW! What's wrong with you people for liking it?  You all want to turn gay men into girls, don't you?" still acceptable, when "What's wrong with you people for liking incest?  You all want to screw your brothers, don't you?" or "What's wrong with you people for writing underage fic?  You all get off at the thought of children being ( Read more... )

IDK, I read the post and started to get all "FUCK YOU GENERALIZATIONS RAAR" but once I read his reasoning I found it specific enough it didn't make me go crazy. A lot of the comments are way off, but the rant didn't seem as generalized as I was originally expecting. And FWIW I think the "strange reason" was sarcasm, but I could be being overly generous.

I do think he directed his rant in the wrong place, though - writers of mpreg aren't at all the only ones who apply heterosexual standards to slash; mpreggers obviously aren't going to be immune to the larger social attitudes that lead to so much slash being het with two male bodies. To single out just one subcategory of slash for being prone to heteronormativity seems remarkably narrow.

Hell, it's not just the slash writers, either - I've seen people turn a woman into a fragile damsel as soon as she's in a relationship.

He seemed to give with one hand and take back with the other, though. He'd be like: 'I know that x, y, and z are exceptions - but it is all like this anyway'.

Mpreg is like highschool AUs and songfics, apparently.

I don't get the hate-on for those, either, except that they are genres that are easy to do badly and popular with the younger, more immature set. There's nothing inherently bad about them, and I've read some of both that were fantastic. Same with mpreg (I don't even get why it squicks people anymore than normal pregnancy fics do).

This is absolutely true, but I think it is singled out because with m-preg it's usually pretty obvious when that's where the writer is going. Pregnancy and the decision to have kids is also an extremely touchy subject for many people whatever their sexual orientation; one way or another it's gonna be a hot button when you throw the m/m bit into the mix. No matter how much logic is applied to either side of the m-preg argument, it's basically a highly emotional topic that is going to induce highly emotional reactions from both sides of the fence.

On a personal level, I dislike all pregnancy fic, male or not. I dislike kid!fic whether it involves a homosexual or heterosexual couple. Because my feelings towards pregnancy and children are less than positive. But that's my feeling, not someone else's, and I'm not about to say someone is wrong for wanting to write or read something I don't. And I sure ( ... )

My feelings towards pregnancy are less than positive, that's part of what fascinates me about mpreg - it puts the shoe on the other foot, has the possibility of exploring how men would feel about it... but I don't actually tend to read it because I'm put off by the possibility of it being handled badly.

Here's why mpreg makes you a failure at supporting gay rights; it glosses over the very real issues of gay couples having kids, and makes gay couples conform to gender stereotypes (except when it doesn't)

...Seriously? Because that seems a lot like saying, "Your fic in which the characters (who do not live on what we know as Earth) face absolutely no stigma or persecution glosses over the very real discrimination that gay people face." Not every story has to be about the Message.

I'm not crazy about m-preg, but I agree with your point. I abhor the 'your kink is not okay' stuff.
