This person is civil, properly uses YMMV where it should go, gives specific examples, and is all around non-confrontational about being confrontational.

(anon's feelings aren't skewed by the fact that they where glasses *whistles*)

That rant bugs me for the sole fact that she uses male pronouns for Grell when Grell is a transgender female.

Grell is hot with her glasses though.

That is always weird for me 'cause I keep feeling like I should think of Grell as a lady, but no one else does, so...

I thought she looked like a girl!

Most of the internet refers to Grell as a man. Even Grell doesn't systematically use female nouns or pronouns. So expecting everyone to automatically think of using only female pronouns to refer to Grell is a bit over-the-top IMO.

Word of God says Grell's female. Canan also makes that clear since that's Grell's whole motivation for becoming Jack the Ripper.

That doesn't change the fact that Grell is referred to as "he" pretty much everywhere and by everyone, in the manga, in the anime, on the Wiki, in fanclubs and so on. Also, the character guide hasn't been officially translated, and the fan translations/scanlations are rather hard to obtain.

I did not know that!

Maybe I should watch/read Black Butler. I like reading about transgender characters.

Unfortunately Grell isn't in the story too much (at least in the manga, I don't know about the anime). She'll probably return at some point since she was talked about in the arc prior to the current one, but when she'll actually show up is unknown.

Grell is depicted as a predatory gay with a crossdressing fetish, not an actual transgender person. It's actually really transphobic.

You know, I was wondering if I was the only person who found her really offensive as a character. The fangirls adore her, but I've always found her obnoxious and completely awful for what the author was saying about gays/transwomen with her.

Sincere question: Is there any fansubbed anime you can recommend which won't piss me off with it's portrayal of women, queers or trans people?

I tried watching Ouran High School Host Club after learning about it on ffr, and being particularly interested in a show with a genderqueer protagonist, and it turned out to be horrifyingly offensive.

I'm between fandoms at the moment, and I'd really like a new show to watch. The only animes I've enjoyed (but I haven't seen very many) have been Card Captor Sakura and Sailor Moon (before Chibi-Usa).

Japanese culture is still really homophobic (lol, as if Western culture weren't!) and misogynistic, so....no. It'd probably all piss you off. Tokyo Babylon has a nice, rather refreshing view that queer people are *gasp!* just people, but the manga is better than the anime by miles. Hokuto's a great character in the manga, too--she takes on a lot of tough subjects with class in a way that is not only unusual for Japan now, but positively unique for Japan in the early 1990s (I'm thinking of the "you're not a gaijin, you're just from somewhere else" storyline, which addresses the fact that the word for "foreigner" was used more literally as "barbarian"). And I don't remember xXxHOLiC to be all that bad for women, though I haven't seen/read much of it in years. CLAMP is usually a little better about how they treat normally marginalized characters, though. Other than that, I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'll think about it, though, and come back to this comment if I can come up with any.

Thank you for your answer :-)

I'll check out Tokyo Babylon, see if it's anything I can deal with. If a show is otherwise really gripping, I can put up with a lot of crap.

I'll also look into xxxHOLIC - I liked CCS, but Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, from what I've heard second hand, did not seem like my thing.

Other anon butting in.

Where CCS was lovely and awesome, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is just a mess. I can recommend CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth, though.
