Uruha woke up late the next morning. It had been long since he last had slept a whole night through without waking up again or not even being able to fall asleep at all. He felt almost rejuvenated, his energy level was high, as well as his spirits. It felt like it would be going to be a good day for him.

He got up, put a Yukata on and stepped out of his room while stretching his arms and yawning widely. A small smile graced his lips as he glanced across the sunny yard in front of him. A stray cat was obviously sun bathing next to the well beside the servants dormitories, a small line of smoke piped out of the tiny chimney of the kitchen. A really ordinary summer’s day.

As he heard a subtle chuckle next to him he turned his head.

“Gozaimasu. Are you willing to eat the breakfast I bring you today? Or are you still scared I’m trying to poison you?” Hiko said with a shy smile and held up a tray.

“Well, Waka is more likely to poison me anyway.” he replied and shrug his shoulders.

“Now that you mention it: I didn’t watch her all the time while she cooked, so… I’m not to blame if she did.” She set the tray down on the parquet floor of the veranda and waited for Uruha to sit down before she removed the lid of the rice bowl.

“Thank you.” he said politely and bowed slightly. With a mouthful of rice he looked at her. “And really, I’m sorry about that black eye I gave you.” He had never really noticed it before because he had always seen her in a dim light up until now.

“Don’t worry, it’s almost gone, right?” In fact it was still pretty visible, but she really didn’t seem to mind. “Right. I’ll get you some tea.” Hiko answered quickly and blushed before getting up and rushing towards the kitchen.

“Ah, look who’s up.” Aoi grinned at him the next second. “Had a good night’s sleep, yes?”

“It was perfect, thank you.” Uruha answered with a nod and went on shovelling food into his mouth.

“And your cheeks are so rosy today, the miracles of a hot bath and a long night of sleep.” the black haired went on and slumped down next to him. “Aw, it feels really good to see you like that.”

He rolled his eyes and smirked. “Where’s everyone else?”

“Huh? Hiroto and Nao took Suzuka to the Matsuri, Waka is in the kitchen and I guess Hiko is too.”

“Ah, it’s Tanabata already? I almost forgot about that.” the blonde mumbled,.

“Yes, I just hope Suzuka doesn’t return with a goldfish again.”

“Oh that, yes… It was really hard to cover its death last year…” Uruha said, thinking about the way he and Ruki had been running around everywhere in Kyoto to buy her a new goldfish so she wouldn't be too sad.

Aoi smiled and nodded, then Hiko returned with a cup of tea.

“Do you want a cup too, Aoi-san?”

“No, thank you. What do you think about coming to the Matsuri later? Waka and I wanted to go. We could have some Sake and eat something nice at a restaurant.”

“I don’t know…” she said and averted her gaze to the floor; there were some obvious reasons why she didn’t want to walk around in public too much.

“Ah, come on. I’ll need some more help if Uruha decides to drink too much Sake again.”

“Hold on a second, who said I’d be going?” Uruha queried.

“Um… Waka did. Waka decided for you because you need to get out a little more, you grumpy old man.” Aoi grinned and shrug his shoulders. “And Hiko, you’ll be coming with us, even if you don’t want to.”

She protested slightly. “But… I…”

“Come on, it will be fun.”

Somehow everyone seemed to be really relaxed that day, but that might be because Reita was still on his way to Tokyo. Telling from their experience so far they wouldn’t have to face their leader’s moods for another four days, even if they rode quickly, pushing the horses to the maximum.

Reita, Kai and Ruki on the other hand had been riding without any major breaks until now. They hadn’t slept at all.

While Uruha was having his breakfast in Kyoto the three men were a good 20 km far from reaching Shizuoka. They had changed their horses somewhere in the Aichi prefecture and if everything went as planned they would get to Tokyo early the next morning. On the last part of their journey they would go by train, since there finally was a train track from Yokohama to Tokyo, a good opportunity to catch a few minutes of sleep before they’d go on negotiating with the Hayashi clan.

And even though the three men were quite exhausted already they didn’t intend on stopping, their ‘mission’ was far too important.

As the sun set Waka was still busy helping Hiko into her Yukata, Aoi and Uruha were ready and waiting near the gates.

“What’s taking them so long?” Uruha muttered and looked at his friend questioningly.

“You know that women tend to take their time, don’t you?”

“Yes, and that’s why women will never be Samurai. Just imagine that, if we had taken just as long when we were getting ready for battle…”

“Uruha, women are not supposed to fight.” the jet black haired man snickered. “But we are supposed to protect them, those fragile miracles.”

“You’re so sappy it almost makes my teeth rot, Aoi…”

Few minutes later Waka and Hiko were ready and the group headed off towards the Matsuri. They had delicious Yakitori and Takoyaki in one of the many Izakaya’s of Kyoto before Aoi ordered the first round of Sake.

By the time not only Aoi but Hiko as well had red noses, their way of talking got slurry and babbly, so Waka and Uruha decided to get out of the Izakaya, maybe a bit of fresh air would do them good.

Hiko was giggling all the time and spread her arms out wide before she spun around beneath the lanterns that were hanging everywhere. “This is so beautiful! I never knew it was so beautiful!” Her face was flushed, she definitely have had too much Sake. “No one ever went out for Tanabata Festival with me before!”

“Shall we better get them home?” Waka asked Uruha, but the tall blonde shook his head and smiled.

“Seems like they’re both really enjoying this, we should stay a little longer.”

“I want to get a goldfish.” With that Hiko stormed off to a stand across the narrow street. She handed some coins to the salesman and started fishing for a goldfish with a small paper scoop.

“I guess that’s alright. If that one dies as well you can work the same trick on her you did with Suzuka.” Waka said with a grin.

“We should better get a second goldfish right now, just in case.” Uruha nodded and crossed his arms in front of his chest, while Aoi was grinning all over his face. “I’ll go and get one.” And with that he joined Hiko, paid for a scoop and started fishing.

“Ne, they are cute together, aren’t they?” Aoi smiled and looped his right arm around Waka’s waist.

“And they stopped yelling at each other.” the maid agreed.

“Do you think what I’m thinking?”

“Yes, we should leave them alone.”

“Exactly.”

“Uh, I’ve got one, I’ve got one!” Hiko smiled not much later and yanked her goldfish in the air, just to have it fall back down into the basin again, the paper scoop tore apart. “Great. I knew this was going to happen.”

“Then I’ll get one for you.” Uruha replied softly, almost a little too soft.

It took him quite a while and he was scared his scoop would tear as well, but finally he got one and the guy running this small stand put the goldfish into a simple cup and gave it to Uruha who immediately handed it over to Hiko.

“Take it as a welcome gift.” he said simply and shrugged his shoulders.

“Thank you, Uruha-san.”

“No need to address me that formally any longer, Hiko.”

“But wouldn’t it be weird if I said ‘Uruha-chan’ like Suzuka does?” she said with a smile while she was observing her goldfish in the cup.

“That wouldn’t only be weird… It would be plain impolite.” Uruha answered and had to laugh at her baffled expression. “No, seriously, if you just say ‘Uruha’ it’s okay.”

“Okay, if you say so.”

“Let’s go back home then, alright? It’s late already.”

“Tomiko-san, stop!” someone behind them yelled all of a sudden and grabbed Hiko’s shoulders to stop her from walking away. She turned around in shock and saw Sakito, her father’s most loyal servant. “I think now I know why you were asking which family had that fir tree as their crest! What do you think you were doing, running off to the Suzuki clan?! You’re father is going mad!”

Uruha pried the servant’s hands off of Hikos shoulders and glanced at him in a confused way, before positioning himself between Hiko and that man. “Who are you?” he asked with a calm voice.

“It doesn’t matter who I am! But Tomiko-san has to come back home this instant!”

“Tomiko? Who’s Tomiko? I only know Hiko.”

“Tomiko-san, your fiancée is waiting for you! He travelled all the way from Tokyo to marry you next week! Do you even realise that you made your dear father lose face?!”

“I will not marry him… You can take that message to my father… And I’ll not come back to his gilded cage, Sakito…” Hiko replied and tried to hide behind Uruhas shoulders.

“You, blonde, stand aside and let me take her back home!” Sakito commanded, surely noticing the commotion they caused along the festival visitors.

“You heard her; she doesn’t want to come back.” Uruha said coldly and crossed his arms in front of his chest.

“Sadly this isn’t up to what she wants, now stand aside!”

“I don’t care.”

Sakito motioned for two other men to assist him. Hiko knew these men, but they had taken Uruha by surprise as they grabbed both his arms in favour to pull him away. And Hiko protested.

“Sakito, please! Let me go!” she yelled as he grabbed her upper arm to drag her back home, back to the place where she had to live like a bird in a gilded cage, back to where she’d have to live up to her father’s standards.
