She was a goddess, a vision of ice and blue, floating over the unworthy ground with frost at her fingertips...
...That was how she was meant to be. What Celes saw, now that the battle was over, was a haggard woman, bruised and grimy with the dust and grease of the factory, cast aside like garbage. She lay slumped over a pile of bones, looking at the four of them with eyes that somehow burned despite her iciness. At the far end of the room was the other that they had fought, Ifrit, leaning against the wall. Espers. They were espers, and this was what was being done to them....
"When they finish draining us of our powers, they dump us down here to die. We haven't much time left..." Celes felt her heart contract. This had been the work of the Empire. Eight years in the Imperial service, the power of magic in her since before she could remember... and this was what it had meant.
"If Ramuh was willing to give you his strength, then we shall do the same..."
And then she was gone, fading, just a stone left. Celes knelt and picked it up, surprised at how cool and smooth it felt. She stared at it, and stared at the cold metal walls, listened to the metal clanging and whirring that echoed through the facility. This is what they died for. I can't say I didn't know. I could have known, if I had only bothered to look. Rumors and whispers. And now... she was gone. A green stone with a crimson heart, that was all that remained of the esper who could wield a raging blizzard. Shiva, the queen of ice, simply... discarded.
Celes' hands tightened around the stone. I will not let this pass. I swear this to you, you and the other espers. I will not let this pass. Vengeance. The word burned through her, filling her with rage, with determination, I will avenge you.
But the weight of the magicite in her hands grew heavy and cold, sinking her rising fury. No, the cold seemed to say. Do not avenge them. They do not give themselves to you so that you can destroy. That's what Kefka wants. And though they were her own thoughts, the words seemed to echo with the voice of the ice goddess.
She would save the world for them. She would stop Kefka, stop the Emperor, save the espers who still lived. Thank you for your strength, Shiva. I will save them for you. On her honor as someone who had turned from the Empire, the traitor's true honor. I will put an end to this. For you.
And holding the stone to her heart, Celes felt the stone sink into herself as that frozen strength merged with her own. Thank you.
