Title: Boundless, Chapter 5
Characters: gen, all crew
Timeline: post-BDM

I am a really really bad person, and I deserve to be punished. RL has been kicking my pigu the last few weeks, but things are finally getting back to normal. It's short, but hopefully the next writer can work with it. *blushes*

"Talk," the man sneered, his chest puffing out arrogantly. "I really don't think so, Captain Reynolds."

Mal froze at the electric whine of several guns being cocked as two men slipped out from behind the rep and slunk down the ramp. Jayne began quietly cursing, and he dropped his hand from his gun with a sigh. There was no cover, and the two mercs (he assumed that was what they were, anyway) had the advantage while still on the ramp. "Bi zui, Jayne," he muttered. Raising his voice again, he said with false cheer, "Now then, ain't no need for unpleasantness. Just lookin' to have a little chat, is all."

The slimy-looking toad ignored him, which made his jaw clench. "Tie them up," Toady said to his men, then turned and stomped back into the ship. All three of them were quickly stripped of their weapons and efficiently secured, sitting on the ground with their backs to each other. Hoping like hell she was listening in with that weird brain of hers, Mal thought hard at River, telling her in his head to stay onboard Serenity; the last thing they needed was for Toady to get his greasy hands on her too.

One of the mercs crouched down near him as the other slipped back up the ramp onto the other ship. "Captain," he muttered as pretended to fiddle with the ropes, "my name is Lieutenant Marcus Ripley, and I'm with the Londinium Planetary Police's Major Crimes Division." Mal just cocked an eyebrow at him. "I've been working undercover now for a year, trying to break this smuggling ring. I think we can help each other."

"Do you now?" Mal murmured. "Don’t know how much you know about me, but I don't think I care to work with a government man." Jayne snorted behind him, and Mal used what little leverage he had to elbow him in the back.

"I know your reputation, Sergeant Reynolds," the man hissed, and Mal felt Zoe stiffen, "and I really don't care to work with a damn browncoat, either. But this may be the best chance I have to break this thing wide open. You know what these bastards are doing to the people on this planet - we want the same thing, and I think together we can make it happen. Are you in or not?"
