Everything, Kaylee had decided, was more fun if you tried to do it all sneaky like. She padded down the corridor to the galley, peering around corners.
“Kaylee girl, what are you doing?” Mal said, behind her. She jumped.
“Can’t tell. It’s a secret.”
Mal gave her a curious look. “What kinda secret?”
“Aw, Cap’n,” she said, giving him her best puppy dog look, “what’s the fun in havin’ a secret if you make me go and tell you what it is?”
“How did I get stuck in the black with a bunch of crazy people?” Mal asked, rhetorically. “Just you make sure your secret involves fixing that broken valve.”
“Did it this morning!” she told him, resuming her sneaking. “Everything’s shiny.”
Mal looked down the hall past her for any secret enemies. Finding none, he shook his head and continued on his way.
Finally, Kaylee stole into the kitchen. There wasn’t much to eat except protein; but, then again, there never was. Still, with the right imagination, it could be entertaining food, if not particularly delicious.
“I thought I was supposed to cook tonight,” Zoe said amiably, entering the room.
