Shadow Organizational Post

Zoe paused and searched the darkening sky for the hundredth time. She never liked feeling exposed to the enemy, and right now they were way too conspicuous for comfort. Up ahead Mal scrutinized the weather-worn surfaces of the looming mountain. Consulting his crude map again, he chose a path and continued on.

They picking their way toward what they thought was a probable lava tube where they hoped to enter the facility and find the children through what they hoped was an inconspicuous rift running towards the mountain.

“They pick at the earth - know we are here and they will find us. They’re upset and ready for the kill,” Katie murmured to no one in particular.

A young boy towards the edge of the huddled group whimpered. “Two by two…”

Shaking the omnipresent screams from her mind, Katie rose. “It’s time - they approach.”

“Aiden, can you tell if they’ve rigged any sensors in there?” Joshua called up to the figure perched just outside the mouth of the lava tube. It was little more than a crack in the side of the mountain, barely big enough to fit a man.

“Knowing the Alliance, it’s a sure bet that they have, but I can’t see anything.”

“They watch us but they do not see us. We must enter their belly before they awake,” River murmured in Mal’s ear.

“Gorramit girl! Can you at least try to make some noise when you approach a guy?” Turning back to the opening, he thought for a moment before saying “Nothing to be gained by waitin’, they’ll just kill us here. Lets just hope Wash and Kaylee ‘v worked out the rest of the bugs with Serenity… And that them purple-bellies aint been watching us for too long.”

“Well, isn’t that a comfortin’ sentiment,” Jayne growled.

“We underestimated their abilities,” a tall figure in the middle of the control room stated. “It will not happen again.

“You, find the students. We will intercept the interlopers.”

Without a glance backward the two pairs of gloved men in black suits left the room. The seats at the various stations in the room, from comm. officer to security tech were filled by the crumpled, blood-soaked remains of their former occupants

The children picked their way through the cave system, gradually approaching the surface and searching for signs of their rescuers.

“faster? Faster!” a boy at the rear called to the rest.

“Too late.” Katie stated, full of terror, and broke into an all-out run with the rest at her heels.

****end of 19****

[My reasoning regarding the additional Blue Meanies comes from the fact that they can’t die here and die again in the comic book, so there must obviously be more of them (well, that and it makes slowlydying’s job more… interesting - sorry!)]
