The female lead in a Final Fantasy story has a mightily important job: she must fall in love with the hero. Why is that the extent of characterization for FF heroines? Are there any strong female leads in Final Fantasy who are not defined by their feelings for a man?

NB: Apparently, this comes across as sexist. I urge you to see it as a plea: show me these romantic plots are not all-encompassing and that the female leads are just as strong without their boyfriends.
