Mal kept forgetting. He'd turn to speak to her, and she wasn't there. He had to keep biting his tongue to stop himself from calling her name. Didn't want the rest of the crew to know how much he missed her.
He was afraid it was going to get someone killed, expecting her to be there when she wasn't. He'd have to remember to watch his own back.
He wanted to blame Wash, but he knew better; Zoe would never allow anyone to pressure her. She made this choice all on her own.
Mal just wished she'd told him why.
