He didn’t doubt that they were innocent in the technical sense; there was only so much trouble that a girl and a doctor could get into. Scratch that. The universe was full of both girls and doctors who found it in themselves to get into worlds of trouble. His gut told him that these two weren’t that kind, though. They certainly appeared innocent enough, insofar as it was ever possible to tell just by looking at someone. But in the end, innocence was like anything else; reality created itself in the mind however that mind saw fit. If the folks in power wanted to imbue the Tams with guilt, then that was just fine. It was all part of the deal, in more ways than one.

And if being a bounty hunter--a law-abiding citizen by definition--imbued a person with innocence, well, all the better.
