Welcome To Eureka!

Allison navigated the hallways of Section 2, using the opportunity to study the young woman at her side a little closer.

"Thank you." The subject of said introspection spoke suddenly, and had her smiling in surprise.

"For what, River?" Pretty name, she thought absently, as they reached the door of the main containment room, where the rest of her strange crew had finished their interview and were waiting. The brother, the Doctor, was busy pacing the length of the room, but the rest of the travelers seemed to be in good spirits if a little wearied.

"I've only been 'girl' for the last…” her voice trailed off, a faint expression of sorrow flitting across her pale features before they broke into a sunny smile. "I've been…me!" Allison laughed with her, unable to resist the glee on the young face. "Allison is a pretty name too." She whispered conspiratorially, but then her brother caught sight of them and was rattling the door of the room anxiously.

"River? River, are you alright?" His voice was muffled by the thick glass, but the worry carried through loud and clear.

"I'm fine, Simon!" she called and tapped fingertips on the cool surface. Giggling at his annoyed expression, she stood aside and waited for Allison to key in the entry code. "They take so much looking after." She stifled a grin, letting the erratic teenager into the room, wondering only briefly how she knew about the name.

"River!" Simon hugged her tightly, not liking being separated for even that short amount of time.

"I'm fine, Doctor Tam. They know even less about the Alliance than we do." Mal perked up at this, eyes catching Zoe's meaningfully.

"You catch anything else they might be thinkin' on? Like what they have planned for us?" Her head tilted absently to the side as she answered.

"No plans, just questions. Confusion. Worried." She smiled brightly at the Captain and he couldn't contain the rare expression from crossing his own face. "The walls have ears, Captain Tight Pants." Kaylee couldn't quite stifle a giggle and even Inara's lips twitched.

"What?" Jayne grunted, jerking away from the smooth white he'd been leaning against.

"Means we got an open comm., Jayne." The large merc grunted again and settled into a comfortable lounge.

"Anyone else amazed at how lucid our resident crazy girl is at the moment? No offense, sweetie." Wash added after a sharp look from his wife.

"I have to say, River, you do seem to be feeling a bit better than before we…well, arrived." Book added from his perch near the door.

"I…I tried a new combination of medicines a few days ago, but the effects should have long worn off. I was going to request a lab, and access to a few prescription-"

"Unnecessary, but sweet to offer." She kissed her brother soundly on the cheek and skipped to Kaylee's side.

"So what about the rest of us? We got a week's worth of needles with our names on 'em?" Jayne straightened as a tall man, the leader of their previous question and answer sessions, as he and a pretty brunette entered the room.

"I think I managed to convince the officials around here the fallacy of that plan." Stark's smile was brief but genuine. "You are all cleared of infectious diseases and otherwise dangerous technologies."

"Dangerous technologies?" Book asked.

"Don't ask." Allison deadpanned, not wanting to get into the long winded exploits of Section 5 and the havoc it continually caused.

"The point is, you are cleared to leave Global." He smiled again at the group of confused faces. "You're free to go."

"Didn't realize we were prisoners." Mal's voice was calm but Zoe stiffened marginally and reached for a weapon that wasn't there.

"Not prisoners-" Allison started, but Stark cut her off smoothly.

"Guarded guests." He and Mal shared a tight smile. "Guests with accommodations."

"You have a place for all of us to stay? All of us?" Inara's smooth alto did the job of distracting Nathan and Mal bristled slightly at the appreciative glance he spared her.

"Well, a few places. We'll be able to secure a few rooms at the local Inn, a few can bunk with the local sheriff and I can spare one as well."

"We don't have any supplies, nothing in payment or even clothing-" Kaylee couldn't help hurrying to explain, horrified at the rudeness of the situation.

"We'll get you taken care of. At least until we can figure out what the next step is."

"Thank you for the hospitality." Again, Mal's voice was a bit tighter than his words but Kaylee's cheer more than made up for it.

"Really, thank you. It's real nice to be planet side, even if by accident." No one could resist her beaming grin, and those familiar with it knew there was little point in trying.

"Mornin' Sheriff!" Jayne jerked around at the shout, seeing a townsperson waving cheerily at the man walking next to him.

"They're fans of yours 'round here then," he muttered under his breath, taking in the sights and sounds of the quaint main street. It seemed to be a mix of border village size with the gleaming cleanliness of an alliance neighborhood.

Kinda gave him the creeps, what without any dirt or rust. Too much like the purple bellies for comfort.

"They like me well enough. We're pretty new in town ourselves." Jack said evenly, trying to match the long strides.

"You and your daughter and your house." They had all woken to Mal's half-asleep hollering that morning, bleary eyed and irritated about 'Some damn wily house woman!' Wash damn near laughed himself sick and proceeded to make immediate friends with the phantom 'SARAH'.

"Pretty much." The pretty brunette, Allison was her name, with the really great pants, had come by to pick Mal and Zoe to head back to the science complex and discuss science-type things. He had a much more important mission at hand; bringing his girls back home. "I take it you're not fans of your local law enforcement." Jayne snorted and winked at a trio of ladies passing by on the street.

"Not s'much, no. What with them torturin’ an' experimentin' on our crew and all." Jack nodded, remembering the dark haired girl and her file.

"Well, we'll do our best to avoid any of that then!" The door rattled as he closed it behind them, looking around for his deputy. "Jo, what's Henry got for us this morning?" Jayne eyed the small cells they'd all woken up in the day before, thinking they'd been better than most he'd had the pleasure of stewing in. But the most pressing matter was the care and well being of his favorite ladies, and he was damned determined to get them back.

But then he noticed the tightly wound deputy that had danced through his dreams and all others were promptly forgotten.

"I'm not babysitting the ape."

"He's just here for his weapons, and then I'll take him to Henry's shop as soon as I update Zoe…uh, my Zoe, not theirs. Just, please, make nice with the public relations, please Jo!" Her mouth snapped shut over more protests, settling on a glare as the sheriff sketched a half-hearted wave before darting back out the door.

"Well hey there, little lady, how are ya?" Her stony gaze did little to intimidate, but if he had to be honest with himself she was coming mighty close. "That good, huh. Yeah, I know the feeling. Waking up 500 years in the past'll do that to a body." He leaned against her desk for good measure, smiling big and wide and reckless. She felt her control strain and smiled coolly as it snapped.

"Listen, Dana,"

"It's Jayne."

"Whatever." She replied, ignoring the flash of anger in his gun metal eyes. "I don't care where or when you're from. I do care about letting an untrained maniac loose in my town with a load of firepower." His palm landed heavily on her desk, but she merely arched an eyebrow.

"Now, I've been real nice about you touchin' my girls, let alone holdin' 'em hostage." He drawled. "But I'm takin' Betty and Lucinda with me and I don't care what you have to say about it."

"You care to bet on that, cowboy?" She placed her own palms on either side of his and leaned in to breathe her words close. He just shrugged and held his palms up in fake innocence.

"Way I see it ain't nothin' exactly keepin' me from takin' 'em from you, Deputy."

She grinned in response and stood up tall, stretching as far as her petite frame allowed and cracking both sides of her neck for good measure.

"Now, I don't like to put my hands to a woman in a damagin' manner…lessn' of course she asks me to." His lecherous wink spiked her irritation another notch and she tried to ignore the warmth settling at the base of her spine at the picture his muscular arms made folded against his chest.

"I guess I'm askin'." She drawled back, nice and slow.

They smiled at one another for a beat before exploding into action.

Jayne braced himself as she launched over the desk with surprising force, jarring but not quite knocking him down. Before he even had time to register her speed, a solid left hook snapped his head back and an equally strong jab to his ribs sent him reeling backwards a few steps.

"Damn, woman, those're impressive as hell!" She grinned and sent two more along with a knee into his thigh.

"Thanks, I know." He laughed and grabbed the both of her wrists before they could do much more damage. She hissed as he yanked them above her head, almost lifting her off the floor, but used the momentum to curl one leg around his legs and yank at his knees. Both swore loudly, in English and Mandarin, as they tumbled to the ground together and he had the presence of mind to take the brunt of the fall on his arms instead of her body.

"You want a right good tussle; we can do this without clothes." She laughed then, slipping from his grip and flipping them both over onto his back.

"In your dreams, Danielle." She huffed into his face, doing her best to ignore the glisten of sweat springing up on both of their bodies. It made her own grip slip a little and he pinned her arms easily.

"It's Jayne, darlin', though I have better ways to make sure you remember." She stretched out over his large frame, taking care to maximize the slide of skin against his. He groaned involuntarily, thoroughly enjoying the flush in her cheeks and the wisps of hair escaping her severe bun. He wanted to see this one undone, all right. Undone and mussed up proper. He could even get behind those uniforms, if they lost a few buttons….

"In your dreams, Jayne." Her face hovered an inch above his own and he jerked back a fraction.

"Don't kiss on the mouth, bao bei," he said with all seriousness and she nodded understandingly. In a lightning movement, her head whipped backward before falling into his face with a sickening crack. He slumped back, unconscious and she chuckled low, with a healthy dose of satisfaction. Propping elbows on his chest, she grinned sweetly.

"Neither do I, pretty boy."

Jack had one moment of complete surprise at the condition of his office. Jo's desk was messy (for the first time, anything but immaculately neat) and papers were scattered across the floor. Her chair was halfway across the room, a few feet away from…

His deputy. Laying spread eagle.

On top of the future mercenary man.

"Guess you took the 'guest relation' bit to heart, huh Jo." She threw a smile in his direction as she climbed up, wincing and rubbing at her wrists.

"Good amount of fight in this one." She commented, grabbing a meaty forearm in each hand and yanking him bodily into the front cell.

"Did we just witness…um…" Jack held up three fingers and shrugged in question.

"Nobody's seen three and lived to tell about it." She patted the well-muscled buttocks affectionately and closed the door behind her.

"A little mean, Jo." He tried, hands on his hips. He had no idea what the large man had said or done, but he doubted waking up behind bars would deter him from repeating the offense.

"If he plays nice, I'll give him some aspirin with dinner." Her smile was genuine and he took a moment to be grateful he wasn't on the receiving end of it.
