The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight

Three Episodes on This Video

The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight:

Movie Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
In Brief: A creepy and borderline scary little story from the man who one critic called “the Stephen King of the Pre-teen set.”
minerva_fan Says: "Do you know why there are so many corn fields in horror movies? Because they’re freaking creepy!" and “Yeah, remember that haunted corn maze you wanted to do this year? NO!”

Netflix Synopsis: No individual synopsis for this episode.

My Synopsis: Now this is Goosebumps done right.

So, like I said - I watch Goosebumps when I want to be creeped out and borderline scared without really crossing all the way over into night light territory. And this episode fit the bill beautifully.

With a scenario that summoned images and thoughts of Jeepers Creepers (not just in my head, but in Deb’s as well) this was a great entry by the master of pre teen horror.

Some of my favorite moments included :

The reaping machine was awesome when it swooped in at the last moment to save the family. One of my favorite Goosebmps saves to date.

I would Recommend This Movie To: Anyone who wants to be creeped out by scarecrows and corn fields, pre-teens, Goosebumps lovers, and wimps who want to be scared, but not too scared… ::Waves at Wife::

Scarecrow was brilliant at walking that line between true horror and safe for younger teens…

Don’t Fall Asleep:

Movie Rating: 2 out of 5 Stars
In Brief: It wasn’t bad so much as it was - young
minerva_fan Says: "Reality Sucks Mom"

Netflix Synopsis: None Exists for this part of the video

My Synopsis: I would have loved it if I was still in the twelve to thirteen age bracket.

I could see why this would appeal to the younger set, I remember feeling the frustration that our young hero feels. I have bemoaned reality repeatedly… so I get it.

That said it could have been an amazing episode all the elements were there.
It had a kind of Dark City esque feel to it in the way that the protagonist jumped from reality to reality.
It had a kind of Men In Black Feel to it in the two men who chase him through those realities…
But somehow it failed to execute to it’s full potential.

Part of me is left wondering if perhaps the episode wasn’t simply too ambitious.
It seems like they tried to shove too much into too short a time period so they ended up glossing over everything and not really doing the most they could with the concepts.

On the other hand if I was 13 I probably wouldn’t have noticed and I would have just thought it was really, really cool.

As it was it was a rather truncated little romp into Dark City meets Alice in Wonderland.

This would be where my favorite scenes would normally go - but I didn’t really have any.

I would Recommend This Movie To: 12 year olds with older siblings or who like reality bending fare.

This episode just did not deliver for me - but I’m sure when I someday have a 13 year old of my own, I’ll rent it again.

Calling All Creeps:

Movie Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
In Brief: A feel good bit of horror for anyone who was tormented in Jr High (What just me? I can live with that.)
minerva_fan Says: "I’m just gonna lay down here on the floor and go to sleep now.” Nah, it wasn’t boring she just knonked out at the start of the episode, poor little sleepy sweetheart.

Netflix Synopsis: No individual synopsis for this episode.

My Synopsis: I shouldn’t have loved this as much as I did.

A tale as old as well, public education.
Nerd gets picked on, nerd tries to get even - and at first it appears to backlash.

A few monsters later - and the nerd is left with the ultimate choice… risk his life to save his classmates or throw them to the wolves in the name of ultimate power…

--->Warning Here There Be Spoilers<--

Some of my favorite moments included :

The end when he chose to throw the little buggers to the wolves… told you I shouldn’t have liked this as much as I did… there was just something satisfying in it for my inner pre teen.

Any scene with Iris in it - I really liked that little girl.

--->End Spoilers<---

I would Recommend This Movie To: Anyone who is being or was tormented in school, Goosebumps fans, and most of the pre-teen set… the one’s who aren’t being picked on might learn a thing or two about what can happen to those who do the bullying.

A twisted, demented little flick - and a little over the line for your typical Goosebumps but despite my moral qualms I really loved this.
