Let's say there's something wrong with my memories. Is there anyone here I can go to for help?

(Sit down, Barron.)

to hell with good intentions, [game: lastvoyages], nothing can go wrong with this plan??

Is this a hypothetical, or is something wrong?

Hypothetical.

[He's not even lying. (Yet?)]

Good to know.

What's with the interest?

Why do I do anything I do? It's just something to talk about.

[Okay, fine, NOW he's lying. But he doesn't care how probably obvious it is. He's counting on Patrick not to push.]

What sort of "help" do you have in mind? Retrieval of suppressed memories? Memory partitioning? Alteration? Repression?

Any moderately skilled psychic could hypothetically help with any of those, but some psychics on board might refuse to perform certain types of memory treatment.

Removal, if possible. Repression if not.

I figured that might be the case. It's a delicate kind of subject. Memories make us who we are. But if I'm here, then I'm here to change who I am...

I see.

Some people might consider that cheating.

It's not the first time it's been discussed as a possible method of rehabilitation, though. Of course, that inmate was a remarkably intractable case. I believe he came from your world or something very much like it. The Joker.

It's cheating the same way Alexander "cheated" with the Gordian knot.

Wow. The fucking Joker. There's nothing to rehabilitate there.

I'm not that hopeless. I don't need an entire new mind. But forgetting a certain part of my life would cut to the heart of things. It would free me to work on what I suspect to be the real problems.

Suit yourself, man. But no one can do it like I can.

That's probably a good thing.

Depends on your point of view. It's kind of like community service in a way. It doesn't cost me anything, they don't remember. Everyone wins.

And you're just the selfless kind of individual to provide this service, is that right?

That depends on what you want. And why you want it.

There's a part of my life I can't get away from because the people involved are on this ship. I've tried to avoid them, but our relationship fucks things up when I try to think about changing. In time, maybe, I will get over this. But if I forgot them altogether, maybe I could be someone new.

Memory manipulation isn't that asy. Without those memories, you might be someone much worse.

I don't think there's anything easy about what I proposed.

Removing those memories won't make me "better" or "worse". It would make me someone different.
