I like this, particularly the thought that Severus was willing to meet and foster Lily's son.

When faced with the boy who was also James's son, though, his heart failed him.

Poor Severus. I love how he was thinking of ways he could watch over Harry until he actually saw him. And he did watch over him nonetheless, but not in the mentory way he'd had in mind. Well done.

Severus constructed a reality that was his own. When his idealized idea of Harry was crushed, he felt he had no choice but punish the boy for not being what he should have been. He couldn't help watching over him, though. Poor man....
