critter sketches and Roza stuff

I was watching 'Walking with Prehistoric Beasts' this week. It was... entertaining. I really want to know the 'how' and 'why', they attribute a lot of behaviours to these critters and I'm wondering exactly what the justification is. I miss Bob Bakker or other egghead holding up some rocks and explaining nerdy stuff, dagnabbit!

I keep meaning to ask this, but keep forgetting. (Maybe this would work well for your tutorial site...)

I want to learn to draw horses better. Is there a good "basic breed" for me to start out on, one that makes a good Standard Horse and can help me learn horse feature fundamentals?

Also, aside from drawing from life, are there any tricks for getting imaginary creatures to look more solid? Your horses and creatures always have a solidity and roundness to them that I still haven't achieved.

I think that whatever breed is used for racing (quarterhorse, maybe) would be a good generic horse to work from. However, you could probably learn a lot of anatomy by studying more bulky muscular drafters like belgians.
I think 90% of my animal anatomy knowledge comes from being horse-obsessed in middle school. The Breyer models are really great for studying.
