Weird things I think about at night #1

In this case it was a curiosity about pronunciation that was running through my head. The question that my brain was chewing on was silly (as it always is) but strangely maddening.

Daddy. How do you pronounce that, in your neck of the woods? I find two ways that come to mind. First, "dah-Dee." Second, "dahd-E." It's two syllables either way, but ( Read more... )

I -think- I'm going to have to go with the first choice but I said the two parts so fast its hard to pin down where any emphasis would be. The Dah part was also less of an "Ah!" And more like "Ack!"

Another possibility is that the second d gets replicated and shows up in both syllables: dahd-dee.

Gah, I hadn't even thought of that! I think it's because some of the kids I've been exposed to have been so shrill on the "eeee!" of the second syllable it never even entered my mind.

We engage in this bizarre behavior where we provide voiceovers for our cats. They use that pronunciation. :)

I think I say it both ways, depending on how quickly it's going.

And unless you're sowing wild oats, I know this question is merely philosophical. ;D
