Firefly/Avatar fusion.

I wrote this before realizing that andromeda3116 has mixed Avatar and Firefly together. The direct crossover is over here, and if both of these fandoms are your cup of tea you should definitely read it.

This fic is slightly different. It happened because I realize that Zuko (like Simon) is the honestly nice character that a disproportionate number

Interesting little fusion. I really liked the idea of Katara as Mal. Unexpected yet surprisingly effective. Keep up writing like this and I may have to add you to my regular rotation of writers.

I thought Sokka might be Mal, but he has Wash's temperament and Katara has the ex-idealist thing working for her. She's also the most likely candidate when it comes to throwing a punch.

I don't think there will ever be a reason for this to come up in a story, but Jet is Yosaffbridge.

This was a great read! I hope you'll decide to go somewhere with it anyway, this seems to be the kind of universe I can just keep on loving ;) Katara as Mal and Zuko as Simon work wonderfully.

I think I spent five seconds thinking Sokka would reprise his role as group leader, but he's way more of a Wash.

If I go anywhere with it, it probably involves Jet as Yosaffbridge. I just had the idea that I could substitute in a mindbent army for the Reavers if I needed a big conflict, and that would also give me an excuse to let Azula start developing the River-powers.

Oh, Jet sounds like something to look forward to. I wonder how Katara will deal with him. And I'm seeing Sokka play with little plastic dinosaurs, and it is beautiful :)

Second part first: Not at all! I'm very new, so I definitely need to start gathering friends.

The first part: I don't know if I can exactly give Sokka little plastic dinosaurs, because they have neither plastic nor dinosaurs, but he will have some suitably ridiculous thing. Using Boomerang as a cuddle-toy might count. All I know so far about Katara dealing with Saffron!Jet is that it falls under the category of "poorly." Things get a little strange, since she's the medic as well as the short-tempered captain, but I just might start after finals are over. I've been waiting for an excuse to get my dad to watch Firefly with me. He likes Westerns and he's a sci-fi geek, I think it's going to be fine.

Suki is in as Inara (she won for the island with the ancient traditions as well as the default uniform), so she's from an island full of Companions. She and Sokka have a thing. Sometimes. That's going to get interesting.

Hm.... maybe you could have Wash's dino's Avatar-ed into animal whistles? After all, there's the bison whistle, and then Sokka picks up Hawkey later...
I totally endorse your characterizations. Totally. Even if it did take me a couple paragraphs to catch on that Aang was in Kaylee's role (*shame*).

I'm very happy to add people on as friends. I've been convinced to write more chapters with Avatar and Firefly all mixed together, and I think I'll loosely follow the show and then the movie.

Aang is a complete and total Kaylee. It took me longer to figure out that Mai was Jayne, but I think she actually fits perfectly. She stays with Katara because life isn't boring.

I really, really want to work in Wash's dinosaurs somewhere. I made Christmas cookies today, and two of them were dinosaurs just because we had the cookie cutters and googly eyes. I have a triceratops and a T Rex, and my mother again thinks that I'm insane.

I might give Sokka some child's toys that are meant to represent a dodo-pigeon or something, but the whistles are a cool idea. Hawky should make an appearance at some point, too.

Lol - I got Mai as Jayne right away, but it was the 'animal-medic' thing that threw me off. I kept thinking, waitaminute... Aang can't be Simon! He's just not... Simon-y enough! And who'd be River then?
And then I caught on, and things read much more smoothly

Things with Aang got pretty odd because they have no need for a mechanic, but healing is usually Simon's thing. It gets weirder because Katara is the trained healer while she's still acting as the leader and one of their foremost badasses.

The entire thing started because I saw Firefly first, and when I was figuring out Zuko he instantly struck me as "such a Simon"--the universe just likes setting him up to get punched in the face. He's not a bad guy, he doesn't generally do bad things, he has terrible luck (and a crazy sister that's more badass than necessary).

Suggestion on the dinosaurs part, the Avatar world has a lot of cool animals so what if Sokka was playing with small wooden animals?

I hope you continue this, I really want to find out more about this 'verse.

I'm working on the second chapter, and responses like this have made me feel ambitious enough to plan out an entire series. I'm mirroring the show's episodes, mostly so I can have a ready-made plot, but adapting everything to make more sense with the world I have already. I'm a detail freak, so I've already listed a cast for most of my main players. I still need to figure out a decent Badger, and decide if I even want to bother with a Niska, but Azula is completely going to follow the general River pathway
