We're having Food Storage Chili for dinner later this evening and in looking through my old tags and memories, I realized I'd never actually posted the recipe here! rackham came up with it years and years ago when we were fairly newly married... and it gets its name from the fact that it can be made entirely with items we have in our food storage (aka ( Read more... )

I'll have to try it. It's good to have recipes like that.

Ooh, that looks good! I'm a fan of crockpot cooking this time of year. I'll have to give it a try! I've never had canned Turkey, Chicken or Beef Chunks. I'm not sure I've ever even seen it, but tracking down a can doesn't sound too hard. I wonder how it would work with just ground turkey?

What size can of beans do you use? I'd prefer dried for the sodium, but not sure what kind of volume!

I'm trying to remember if I've ever used ground turkey or ground beef in it and I don't think I have. I really like the texture of the canned meat (it flakes up really well... so you can get away with a lot less meat and not really notice). It would probably work best to cook the ground turkey, first, if you do decide to try it. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever seen the larger cans of meat in regular grocery stores. We've always just picked them up at Costco.

The beans are the standard 14oz cans. So, after draining and rinsing, probably 12 ounces of beans per can... meaning about 36 ounces of hydrated and cooked beans. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!

Sounds delicious! How many portions does it make?

It's funny, because I realized I actually didn't know. Since there's just two of us, my main concept of the amount it made was "Enough for each of us for one meal, plus plenty of leftovers." LOL! Looking over what we have left over in the fridge after what we ate for dinner last night, I would say that it makes six servings.

I want to try this, too! My usual shelf-stable meal is Indian stuff from Trader Joe's over rice.
