“Okay...tell me why I came along on this trip again?” Janet asked as she shivered in her heavy jacket, moving closer to Sam and using the taller woman’s body to block some of the cold wind blowing their direction.
Sam look down at her side, smiling at the bundled up doctor but Janet couldn’t see it because of the full toboggan covering Sam’s face but you could tell she was smiling because of the crinkles around her blue eyes; with a muffled reply she told Janet, “Because you didn’t want to leave collecting this stuff to a group of soldiers.”
Janet just groaned and moved closer to Sam; the ’stuff’ she referred to was a sap from one of the trees on a new planet SG-1 explored a few days ago. Walking through a forested area Daniel had tripped over a hidden root and fallen face first into one of the trees. The poor accident prone man suffered a broken nose along with several nasty gashes on his cheek and forehead; at least this is what Janet was told later on in the infirmary, the nose was still broken but there were no sign of the cuts on his face. Sam told her they disappeared about ten minutes after the initial injury so she had taken samples of the tree’s bark and sap, bringing them back to the SGC for Janet to test.
After running several tests and keeping a close eye on Daniel for a couple of days to make sure there were no side effects from the tree’s sap, Janet asked to return to the planet to collect more of the blue-tinted goo; sighting to General Hammond that it made an excellent antiseptic with the ability to heal minor cuts in minutes. He agreed and here she was, freezing her extremities off with SG-1 as they rigged the trees to harvest more of the sap.
“You said it was cold but not this cold Sam; this is bone numbing,” she stuttered out, burrowing into her coat more as her teeth chattered.
Sam completed tapping the spout into the tree and hung a bucket under it to catch the blue goo as it slowly trickled out, “Well you insisted and besides we haven’t spent some time off world together in awhile,” she said picking up her tools and moving to the next tree, Janet staying glued to her side.
“I was thinking more along the lines of a nice temperate place to visit together, you could have talked me out of this,“ Janet said her voice muffled by the scarf she wrapped tighter around her lower face as they moved.
“And miss out on snuggling close to share body heat at night…never,” Sam replied winking at her partner.
“Well let’s hurry up then I need some hot coffee, my toes are starting to go numb,” Janet said, grabbing a spout and bucket and moving to another tree.
A half hour later they walked into the large tent set up for them to cook and eat in, sighing as the warmth from the cook stove hit their cold faces. Pulling off gloves and hats they sat on camp stools and Sam poured them up cups of coffee from the pot left on the stove.
Janet held the hot cup between her hands, letting its heat seep into her numb fingers, blowing over the top she sipped the hot liquid, “Mmmm…warmth trickling through my body,” she said sighing in content and making happy noises.
Grinning at her partner Sam sipped her coffee, “This is fresh…one of the guys must be back already,” she said.
The opening of the doorway made them turn as Daniel made his way into the tent, he bounced up and down on his feet, trying to get the feeling back then smiled at the two women, “Ahh…I see you found the fresh coffee,” he said moving to sit by them.
Janet poured him a cup and passed it over, “How’s your nose feeling?”
“Not bad actually…I think the cold keeps it from hurting so bad,” he told her grinning.
Janet ran a critical eye over his face, “Well the swelling looks better and the bruising is starting to fade but you still look like a raccoon,” she said smiling at him.
“Oh yeah…Jack won’t let me forget that…I’ve had to put up with him making wisecracks for four days now,” he said in a disgruntled tone.
The women laughed at the comment and Daniel joined in; the tent opened again and Jack along with Teal’c entered, pulling off his gloves and hat the Colonel said, ”Well all the trees in our section are tapped; in a couple of days we should have enough of that blue stuff for you to carry home Doc,” he said looking at Janet.
“Good…because after two more days of this I might lose a limb from frostbite,“ Janet replied a little sarcastically.
“It’s not that bad Janet…actually this is pretty tame compared to some of the places we’ve been,” Sam said, sipping her drink and eyeing the doctor.
“Yeah Doc…at least there’s no snow…then you’d be wet and cold,” Jack quipped, taking the cup Daniel handed him.
“Oh joy,” Janet muttered, causing everyone to laugh, well everyone except Teal’c who raised an eyebrow at the petite doctor, “Did you not come fully prepared for the cold Dr. Fraiser?”
“Oh I did Teal’c… but apparently my version of cold and someone else’s is a little different,” she said to him, cutting her eyes over at Sam who ducked her head.
“Well it will be dark soon; whose turn is it to cook dinner?” Jack asked.
Daniel and Janet pointed fingers at each other and Sam pointed to the doctor as well, “Well then I guess it’s your turn Doc, you’ve got more fingers pointing your way,” Jack said smiling at her.
“Now I see why no one talked me out of this trip, you just wanted to use me for my cooking skills,” she said eyeing the four team members.
“Guys…I think we’re busted,” Sam said grinning at her partner.
“I say if we’ve got you with us use it,” Jack told her and ducked out of the way to avoid a glove thrown at him.
“Well clear out of here and give me some room to move,” Janet told them making shooing motions as she stood up to remove her coat.
Grumbling at being kicked out of the warm tent the four members of SG-1 pulled their coverings back on and filed out leaving Janet to work her magic on the MRE’s they’d brought to eat; they split up once outside each going to their tents to wait on Janet to call them back for dinner. Sam unzipped the tent she shared with the doctor and once inside noticed something was missing…their sleeping bag and extra blankets. With a confused look on her face she went back outside and wandered over to the cook tent, sticking her head through the opening she asked Janet, “Hey…did you move our stuff this morning?”
“What stuff?” Janet asked in reply as she stood over the stove, working to prepare a hot stew.
“The sleeping bag and blankets,” Sam told her.
“No…I left them folded up and sitting in the corner of the tent when we left out this morning; why?” Janet said.
“Because they’re gone,” Sam told her; a loud yell was heard and Sam pulled her head out of the tent, turning she saw Jack throwing his hands up in the air.
“What’s wrong?” she called out.
“My blankets and sleeping bag are missing,” he replied in a loud voice.
Daniel’s head poked out from his tent, “Mine are gone too,” he told them.
“As are mine O’Neill,” Teal’c stated as he walked up to stand next to the colonel.
“This is so not funny, “ Jack muttered; “Alright then…while the Doc cooks we go look for our gear,” he told his teammates.
Sam nodded and stuck her head back in the cook tent, “Did you hear all that?” she asked Janet.
“Yes…do you want me to help?” Janet said giving Sam a questioning look.
“Nah…you stay here where it’s warm, we’ll be back before it gets any darker,” Sam told her.
“Be careful…I really don’t want to put all my skills to use on this trip,” Janet told her and Sam gave her a grin along with a little salute then ducking back out of the tent she left with the others to hunt for their missing items.
A few hours later Janet paced back and forth in the tent, it had now grown dark, the temperature dropping significantly with the loss of sunlight and the team was not back yet. Sticking her head out of the tent she glanced around, finally spotting the faint movement of flashlights as the team made its way back to camp, ducking back into the tent she began readying the hot food for when they showed up.
One by one they tramped into the warm tent, pulling covering off their hands and faces, then stomping booted feet to get the feeling back in them. Removing their heavy outer coats they all took seats on stools and Janet passed out bowls of steaming hot stew, “Any luck?” she asked taking a seat on a stool next to Sam.
Mumbling around a bite of food Sam replied, “Nope…no sign of them anywhere.”
“Teal’c couldn’t even find any tracks leading away from the camp,” Jack muttered.
“The ground around our campsite is very hard Dr Fraiser, it does not hold marks very well,” Teal’c told her when he saw the confused look on her face.
“Yeah if we had found tracks we’d have our stuff back by now,“ Jack grumbled taking a bite of his dinner.
“Well I guess we’ll have to improvise the sleeping arrangements then,” Janet told them, “Sam and I still have a sleeping bag,” when she saw the confused look Sam gave her she added, “I checked my pack while you were gone, mine is still there.”
Daniel and Jack shot each other a look and then Daniel spoke, “No fair,” but he gave Janet a grin, “Does this mean I have to put up with Jack’s snoring?”
“Hey it’s not that loud,” Jack remarked, earning him groans from Sam and Daniel both, “okay…so it’s a little loud.”
Janet chuckled at their reactions, “Jack…you, Daniel and Teal’c can sleep in here with the stove; I’d say we would too but it would be a bit cramped with five people,” she said motioning around the inside of the cook tent, even with the five of them sitting on stool, space was at a minimum inside the tent.
“Good idea Doc…tomorrow we can head to the gate and get new ones sent to us but for tonight that should work,” Jack told her and then passed his bowl over for more stew.
Finishing with their meals and putting away the dirty dishes to clean in the morning the five sat around on stools passing the time talking about things that occurred on other missions. Janet listened as they told of funny incidents and harrowing adventures, her respect for what Sam and the others went through growing exponentially as she listened to tales of things not included in their mission reports. As the hour grew later she yawned and nudged Sam, “Are you ready to turn in?”
“Yeah…you go ahead and I’ll help the guys move stuff around so they can sleep in here,” Sam told her, “be there in a few minutes.”
Janet stood, pulling on her coat she told the men good night and left to get ready to sleep, leaving Sam alone with her team mates.
“Are you sure you didn’t hide our stuff Carter, just so you’d get to share that sleeping bag,” Jack joked as they folded up the camp stools.
“Sir…we have a rule…no fooling around off world, now cool it with the snide remarks,” Sam told him her tone serious.
“Okay…I was only teasing Sam,” Jack said bumping her with his shoulder.
“It’s still not fair,” Daniel said as he moved the stove back some, “You guys get to share body heat while I have to deal with Jack’s snoring, somehow that’s just not right.”
Sam shrugged, “Not my fault…but you’re a big boy you can take it,” she said grinning at her friend.
“If you wish Daniel Jackson I can show you a meditation technique used to block out unwanted noises,” Teal’c said to the archeologist.
“Oh for crying out loud…my snoring is not that bad!” Jack exclaimed in frustration.
The three stopped talking and just gave him identical oh really looks, which caused Jack to shrug, “I still say it’s not loud.”
Sam laughed and wishing then a good nights sleep pulled her coat on and ventured out into the cold, making her way back to the tent she shared with Janet. Unzipping the tent she entered and found the lantern on and the doctor already snuggled down in the sleeping bag. Quickly stripping off her garments until she was left standing in her thermals and socks she climbed into the bag as Janet held it open; reaching down Sam zipped the sleeping bag up until they were nice and cozy laying on the ground.
The doctor snuggled up close to her side, laying her head on Sam’s shoulder, “You got picked on didn’t you?” she asked.
“Of course…it’s not like they don’t know we share a sleeping bag anyway, this just made it more obvious and Jack couldn’t help but make a comment about it,” Sam replied, wrapping her arms around her smaller partner’s body.
“Mmhuh…” Janet hummed, “I wonder what happened to the rest of the bags and blankets?” she asked, her voice growing sleepy.
“There’s no telling,” Sam replied, muffling a yawn in the doctor’s hair.
Stretching her head up Janet placed a kiss on the underside of her partner’s jaw, “I guess we’ll never know…night sweetie,” she said.
Janet heard a mumbled ‘night’ and felt a kiss on her temple as Sam drifted into sleep. Snuggling closer to her taller partner, Janet closed her eyes and enjoyed the warmth from Sam’s body as she too fell asleep, wrapped in her partner’s arms.

In a little cave, deep in the rocky hillside high above the team’s campsite two small ape-like creatures luxuriated in the added warmth of their new bedding. It had been a most fortunate find for them to make as they wandered down from their home in search of food…the added warmth from the blankets and sleeping bags would let them sleep comfortably through the long winter ahead.
