Olivia typed furiously trying to finish her latest case DD5 before lunch. The phone rang, picking it up she answered, “Special Victims Unit Benson speaking.”
“Hello Detective…are you almost ready for lunch?” the voice on the other end asked.
Liv smiled, “Well that depends…are you buying today?”
“Meet me in our spot in the park,” was the reply, then the call disconnected.
Liv gave a confused look at the receiver, shrugging she hung up the phone; shutting down her computer she stood, grabbing her jacket.
“Off for lunch?” Elliot asked from his desk.
“Yeah…be back in an hour,” she called out walking out the squad room doors.
Soon she was strolling along the tree-covered pathways of Central Park, reaching a side trail she walked up the hill until she came to the secluded glen overlooking the lake that was their favored spot. She found her girlfriend sitting on a blanket, her shoes and suit jacket off with legs tucked under her, a picnic basket waiting to beside her.
“What brought this on?” she asked removing her jacket and sitting down cross-legged next to Alex.
Alex leaned over giving her a light kiss and replied, ”Well it was such a pretty day; I thought a picnic was in order.”
“Yummy…what did you bring?” Liv asked as she pulled the basket over.
Alex began spreading out the different foodstuffs and they dug in, enjoying the weather and each other’s company.
Breaking off a piece of bread, Alex tossed it to a squirrel who ventured close to the blanket. It grabbed the morsel up and happily munched away; finishing it, the squirrel waited on another tidbit, which Alex threw its way.
“Stop doing that,” admonished Liv.
“Why? It’s cute,” replied Alex, tossing another bit of bread to the animal.
“The only difference between rats and squirrels is rats have hairless tails; stop feeding it,” her girlfriend remarked.
“Do I detect a dislike for furry creatures?” Alex said poking Liv in the side.
“No…just rodents,” Liv replied with a shrug as she finished off her sandwich.
Glancing at her watch Liv suggested they finish up and head back. She helped Alex pack away their trash in the basket and picking up the blanket, they began the walk back to their offices. They almost reached the walkway when Liv heard a furious chattering behind them, stopping Alex she turned to find the squirrel following them.
“I told you not to feed that thing, now it thinks it belongs to us, “Liv told her girlfriend.
Alex shrugged, “Sorry,” walking towards the squirrel she made shooing motions with her hands, “Go on shoo, you can’t come with us.”
The squirrel chattered at her, swishing its tail back and forth it scampered away from them.
They walked on until reaching the paved walkway only to hear a barking noise behind them, Liv turned to see their stalker, “I’m going to shoot it if it doesn’t run off,” she growled.
“Don’t do that,” gasped Alex, “just keep walking, it will go away.”
Liv sighed but kept walking…suddenly the squirrel appeared in front of them, chattering loudly, its tail swishing furiously.
“Can I shoot it now?” she asked looking at Alex.
“Ignore it,” Alex replied, pulling Liv along with her.
As they walked past the angry animal it jumped up, landing on Liv’s leg; it proceeded to scurry up her body to end up on her shoulder. She yelled out swatting at the squirrel with her hand which the squirrel latched onto, biting down hard.
“Son of a bitch!” Liv yelled as she shook her hand trying to dislodge the animal.
Alex didn’t know whether to laugh or try to help as she watched her girlfriend dance around trying to shake the squirrel off. Soon she succeeded and the squirrel went flying through the air to land on the ground. It shook itself a few times then barked at the two and scurried up a nearby tree.
Liv pulled out a handkerchief and wrapped her bleeding hand, and then she pulled out her phone tossing it to Alex who was trying very hard not to laugh.
“I told you not to feed the damn thing,” she growled out, stomping off she called out, “call Cragen and tell him why I’m going to be late!”
“Oh crap,” muttered Alex as she scrolled through the numbers, “I definitely have to figure out how to apologize for this one.”
