Sam walked up to the open doorway; knocking on the doorjamb to get the occupants attention, she waited for him to notice her. After a few moments with no answer to the knock, she walked into the room. Daniel was busy with his head trapped in some obscure ancient text. Walking over to stand behind him, she cleared her throat loudly. This caused the poor man to jump in his seat, but it got his attention.

Turning around to face the sound he found Sam standing there with a grin on her face, “Oh…Hi Sam… I didn’t hear you come in,” he remarked.

“Sorry for startling you,” said Sam, “but have you seen Vala? I’ve looked everywhere for her; neither Cam nor Teal’c has seen her and for once she’s not in the infirmary trying to hit on Janet.”

“Oh…well that’s good…the part about her not hitting on Janet, not the can’t find her part,” Daniel said grinning; then the grin fell slapping his forehead he groaned.

“What’s the matter?” Sam asked a worried look on her face now.

“She was here earlier, pestering me to death. I made the comment that she should go fly a kite. You don’t think she took me literally do you?” he replied frowning.

“Daniel…she’s still mastering slang, she probably did,” Sam told him.

Sam started for the door turning back to Daniel she spoke, “I’ll go check and see if she left the base. If she has then we’ll let everyone else know they need to start searching for her as well.”

Daniel nodded, waving goodbye to Sam as she left. He began tiding up his desk to keep himself occupied until she let him know something.

Sam entered the elevator, pushing the buttons for the top level she waited as the car rose, surely Vala hadn’t wandered off base, with all that recently occurred to her the woman was becoming a regular fixture at the SGC; not even bugging General Landry to let her leave anymore.

The doors opened and Sam walked out, venturing over to the checkpoint, she asked the SFs on duty if they had seen the woman. One of them answered her, “Yes m’am…she went outside a couple of hours ago. She was carrying a bundle of material and asked us if we knew of a nearby clearing.”

Sam asked where that was and they informed her, giving the directions to said clearing. Thanking them she traveled on outside. It was a beautiful day at Cheyenne Mountain; the sky was bright blue, sun shining brightly with just a small breeze blowing. Sam walked around to the fence, following it she soon came to the clearing about which the SFs told her. There, sitting on the ground was Vala; she had a bunch of material strewn about her and it looked as if she was crying.

Sam clicked on her radio, “Daniel.”

“Yeah Sam,” he answered.

“I found her. If anybody else asks we’re outside, the SFs on duty know where we are,” she replied.

“Alright Sam…she’s trying to fly a kite isn’t she?’ he asked.

“Trying is the key word Daniel…I’ll get back to you later,” Sam remarked ending the transmission.

Walking up to Vala, Sam knelt beside her, “Hey…what’s wrong?” she asked the crying woman.

Vala wiped the tears from her face and with a sniffle replied, “Daniel told me to go fly a kite…so I looked it up on the base computer and I’ve been trying to do it; but it’s not as easy as it looked on the screen.”

“Well he didn’t mean literally go fly a kite,” laughed Sam, “but it’s a nice day for it. Want some help?”

Vala sighed, “You humans and your euphemisms; I’ll never master them all.”

“Eh…it’s okay. Come on let’s see what we can do with this material,” Sam told her as she began sorting through the pile of scraps next to Vala.

Before to long they had built a simple kite from the scraps, without going into geek mode Sam explained the basic principles of kite flying to Vala. Soon they succeeded in launching their project up into the sky. Once it was airborne, they heard the sound of clapping behind them; they had been so engrossed in making the kite that they failed to notice the audience gathering behind them. Standing there clapping loudly was the rest of SG-1 along with Janet.

The group walked up to stand next to the two women and Cam spoke up, “Nice kite ladies, think you have enough to make a couple more?”

Vala grinned at Sam and replied, “Oh I think we can put together a few more.”

For the rest of the afternoon the clearing rang with laughter as the group of friends enjoyed the day flying their kites.
