Thank you and probably not - in my mind they are totally doing it and are my OTP but I could see it as being comfort (that Kaylee would take as pity)

Yeah, they're practically canon in "The Train Job" and "Serenity" the episode.

I like the idea that Kaylee would misunderstand it as pity 'cause then I don't have to think badly of Inara and Kaylee totally feels inadequate around Inara so it feels very in character for her (her being Kaylee).
