Note: Caroline's POV

Some say that The Hermit represents the time we learn our true names; who we really are. The Greek philosopher Thales is reported to have been asked, “What is the most difficult of all things?” To which he is said to have answered “To know yourself.”[citation needed] The Hermit is given time to obey the Delphic Oracle’s demand: know thyself.[citation needed]

There is a storm this afternoon.

With Charles and the girls in town, and Grace asleep, I revel in my still new pleasure of solitude.

I am sewing for you--making firpins which will touch you intimately in my absence. They will caress your body all day, and at unexpected times you will feel their touch, which is my touch, and your heart will pound as mine is pounding now, thinking of you.

I could cry over the years we wasted denying our love, covering our attraction to each other with petty grievances--but no more. Now I realize the truth, and it has, indeed, made me free.
