Kaylee's relationship with Inara is nothing like the one she has with Serenity.
It's messy and it’s complicated and impossible to interpret. Which is okay, she’s used to that. People as a rule are harder to read than her girl. Or at least the needs they telegraph are harder to meet. Generally, the only limiting factor to satisfying Serenity is the money. It’s never so simple with her fellow crew members, and anyways she wouldn’t buy friendship even if she could.
‘Sides, money would buy her a companion - not Inara.
It’s not till she’s lying below Inara, hot even though her coveralls are half-off, hands covered in oil as she searches for all the places that need tending, that she realizes she’s been sort of wrong all along.
Her deepest relationships really don’t differ all that much.
She knows how to touch them both.
