This makes me think about the way Inara relates to people. I mean, here she's leaving because of Mal (basically), because she can't deal with who she is when he's around - at least that was my interpretation. An Inara is kind, and loving, and everything a companion and a priestess should be, and I could see her, in her relationship with Kaylee, be all that and give her a good kind of parting. I'm sure it hurt her to part with Serenity and the crew and in a femslashy setting it should have been a particular wrench to part with Kaylee; but that still leaves Mal reigning sort of supreme - if not in her affections - but as someone who makes her lose her self-control. Yeah. :D Somehow your femslash made me think of het. How would you analyse the situation, or do you think there's another reason for Inara to leave - some other interpretation than a powerful love-hate relationship to why Inara feels she must leave?
It reminded you of het? Does this mean I have to try harder? ^_~
I want to state that I am not crazy, I understand the cannon and actually kind of like the Mal/Inara love. But when asked to justify the femslashy subtext of the leaving, I tend to think this:
I always kinda thought that Mal and Inara had a fight about Kaylee. Mal is her 'big brother' and like most, if not all, big brothers he was looking out for her. And with Inara always away, always with a client, he was afraid she was going to get hurt. Inara left because she saw some logic in his words, she left before she could do any actual damage. Leaving before the storm, kind of.
Also, even though I personally believe that Kaylee didn't care, I think that Inara felt sick every time she slept with one of her clients. Even if it was her profession, she viewed it was cheated and so she felt she was forced to choose...
Ahah, sorry! I don't know how that happened. I don't actually ship them or anything, I just started fitting the fic in the events.
There is a lot in what you say! There was definitely an air of leaving before the storm, in what Inara did - a little better than running away from the situation.

Hee, I get really excited when I post to comms and the mod replies too! I think that's fairly common in fandom (although, ah, I feel a little guilty because recently I've been so busy that I haven't been commenting on much of anything at all).
