Mai had practiced writing for her English composition class for the past week or so. It still didn’t come as naturally to her as writing kanji, but she thought she was getting the hang of it. One day after class, she decided to show Natsuki what she had learned. Mai sat next to the blue-haired girl on a garden bench as she read a book, silently tracing the letter “I” on her right hand with a gentle stroke from her finger.

“What are you doing?” asked Natsuki, pushing up her reading glasses.

Mai kept quiet and continued to write letters on Natsuki’s palm: “L-O-V-E”. Natsuki didn’t take English, but she recognized what Mai was writing after seeing the word on dual-language Valentine’s Day cards. She had a feeling she knew what Mai was going to write next, but kept quiet until she saw the last “U”.

“Oh…I never knew,” she replied quietly.

Mai was surprised by Natsuki‘s nonchalant reaction. “Huh? You actually understood that?”

“Yeah. I didn’t think that you would write something like that. Are you really serious?”

“Maybe.” Mai grinned. “Wanna talk about it over dinner? I’ll cook.”

Natsuki smiled back, and wrote “Y-E-S” on Mai’s left palm.
