The first time Prudence heard Sadie sing she fell in love.
In Sadie’s voice was everything Prudence had kept hidden inside her whole life. All the loneliness she felt, living with her secret longing for a kind of love she thought was impossible. All of her fierce passion and desire for the beautiful girls she dared not touch or even dream of.
If Sadie could sing like that it seemed like she would understand a girl like Prudence.
Sadie cared about Prudence, loved her as a friend but she was with Jojo. Sadie had her own thing going on.
So Prudence left to find something of her own. She stopped sitting in the shadows, peeping in other peoples windows. She found a crazy creativity that was all her own, and a girlfriend named Rita (a contortionist don’t you know). She plucked out her own song on the plinkity plink keys of a toy piano.
And though Prudence’s first love was never her lover, she and Sadie played their music together and there was love.
