“These questions are so stupid!” Mal exclaims, slamming down papers. “I’d just about rather take their stupid interview than fill this thing out!”
“Then why don’t you?” Evie asks, quirking a brow as she looks up from sewing her latest creation.
“Because they want to do it on the same night as the dinner we’re supposed to attend with his parents. Remember. The big shindig, with all the neighboring Princes, Princesses, and other royalty visiting?”
“I remember.” Evie strokes the dress’ material. She knows she’s going to look beautiful in the dress, but she also knows Mal will barely notice. “So what’s the question?”
“When did you first notice you were smitten with Prince Ben? Smitten! Who even talks like that any more?!”
“I’m guessing Princes and Princesses do. So when did you first notice you maybe really liked Ben? When did you start falling for him?”
“I guess . . . when he first treated me as a normal human being instead of the daughter of Maleficent, the fire-breathing dragon.”
“Hmph.” So that’s when she’d fallen for Ben, Evie thinks. She fell for him because he was kind enough to treat her like normal, and yet Evie fell for Mal way back when she first made her feel special. She blinks back tears and quickly resumes sewing a dress that won’t matter, ignoring the girl who’ll only ever be her friend as she finishes filling out the survey about the guy she’s going to marry and with whom she’ll leave Evie behind.
