She feels like she’s dying every time she has to do this, but she doesn’t have a choice. Failing this game will bring her death and worse. She doesn’t care what happens to her; she has to keep this illusion for Ivy. If she tells her the truth, she might as well sign her death warrant, because she knows what will happen if Ivy fights Mister J. It’s the reason she keeps walking these lonely steps every damn night before the sun can rise.
Harley freezes, glancing up as two shadows cross above her. The Bat and Cat don’t realize how lucky they have it. Sure they’re on opposing sides most of the time and he’s jailed her plenty, but it’s not like he really hurts her. He’d never kill her, or kill another person if she offered her something he couldn’t.
But the Joker, even at his best, has no honor. She’s been awakened to that at last and to the harsh reality in which she lives. The only way she can escape him is through death, and she’s not ready to give up the new love, the real love, she’s found for that to happen.
She stops just outside his door, looking at the rose she’s clutched in her hand this entire trip. The bud is crushed, like Pammy’s bones would be if Joker found out. But he won’t find out, Harley swears. She lets the wind take her wounded flower and reenters her own trap.
