Kitty stands back as Rachel goes forward, all smiles. This is not a moment meant for fear or worries. This isn't her moment at all. This is a moment for happiness, for joy, a moment she had known would one day come again ever since Jean died, and it is here at last. Still, there's something that worries her, something that makes her have to bite her bottom lip to keep from calling out to stop Rachel from reuniting with her own mother.
Rachel's head jerks up. Kitty can't see the storm in her green eyes, but she hears it in her voice as she cries out, "You're not my mother!"
"What are you talking about? Of course I am!"
"No, you're not! My Mother wouldn't judge us! She'd be happy for us!"
"Rachel," Kitty cuts in, the voice of reason, "maybe she wouldn't be -- "
"Of course she would be! She knew about us before! She was happy about us before! Whatever this thing, it isn't her!"
Thunder rumbles through darkening clouds. "She's right, Kitten," Ororo says from behind Kitty. "This beast isn't our Jean."
The thing throws back their friend's head and laughs. "Had you going there, didn't I?" it crows, but Kitty's smiling, her confidence returning.
Maybe her dearest friends are right. Maybe when Jean does back, the reunion will be nothing but happy. Maybe she will still love her daughter and herself despite the fact that they love each other.
"She will," Storm vows, and the battle begins.
