Felicity was always scared in this moment.
She didn’t hear a word of the big introduction from the announcer. Her eyes were on Sara as she stepped into the ring, waving to the appreciative home crowd.
Felicity was in the front row. Sara met her eyes and gave her a wink. Felicity blew her girlfriend a kiss.
Sara was the reigning champion in her weight-class. She was a great fighter. Felicity admired her talents. But every fight was a risk. Every punch was danger. Champions never lasted forever. Sara might be lucky enough to retire undefeated one day, but maybe not. She could have her title taken from her, and if that happened the emotional and physical pain would be devastating.
The bell rang. The crowd roared. Most cheering for Sara, some for her opponent Carrie "Cupid" Cutter. The redhead was quick on her feet and she had a wicked right jab that three times got through Sara's defences to strike her face.
Felicity winced at the hits but kept on cheering for her love.
The second round was worse. Carrie seemed to only get faster and hit harder.
Felicity watched nervously while a cut at Sara's brow was attended to in her corner.
Right off in the third Carrie came at her, Sara bobbed and weaved and suddenly lashed out, a vicious punch that caught Carrie on the side of the head. She dropped. Knocked out.
"Not today," Felicity said under her breath then when wild with everyone else.
