Waiting patiently for their turn Sara and Nyssa were holding hands. There was a long line of people ahead and behind them. The bright corridor was narrow, the floor and ceiling were bare metal, the walls painted pale blue.
Men, women and children waited. Everyone was wearing a white skintight, almost completely see-through, suit. The fact that everyone was pretty much naked was the last thing on anyone's mind.
There was an atmosphere of excitement and fear. They were going into the unknown. But they were leaving the horror behind.
"We're so lucky," Sara whispered.
"And we'll appreciate it every day."
When at last they made it to the front of the line they were led by a woman in a military uniform down a much wider hallway, one that was lined with pods that had windows on the front of them. Every one they passed had a person inside who appeared to be sleeping.
Really, they were in stasis.
There was no time for a long goodbye. A quick kiss and they were hurried into their pods.
The pods sealed closed.
Looking out the window Sara hoped that they would make it, that she would have a life with Nyssa.
"Sleep now," a voice said.
Like all the others Sara drifted into a peaceful sleep.
Once all were in stasis the Arkship launched, blasting away from the bleak hell of dust and ash the Earth had become, taking the only humans who were to survive out to the stars.
