Disclaimer: This one's mine, folks.
I still remember when you first wrapped this leather jacket around me. It seemed like everybody was staring at us. We weren't exactly normal then. No woman who was willing to speak her own mind was back then, especially if she didn't need a man, and we never have. But after what we'd just been through, everybody in town was staring.
Once you had me in your jacket, though, and you looked into my eyes, I forgot about the townies. I forgot about the rest of the world. You were all that mattered to me in that moment. You've always been the most important thing to me ever since that day.
And ever since that day, too, I like to slip into your old jacket or at least hold it close and smell your scent on it. After all these years, it still has your scent, Bette. It still smells like you, and I can close your eyes now and almost imagine you're still here with me, still holding me close, oh so sweetly and protectively.
But it doesn't matter that I can only imagine it now. The doctors told me weeks ago I didn't have much longer. They asked me if I wanted to try to fight; I surprised them when I told them no. I don't want to fight any more. I'm tired of fighting. I have been since the war. I only want to be held by you again, and I know soon, that's exactly what's going to happen.
My head droops. I let my eyes close. I let my breathing stop. But when I feel again, it's you wrapping around me. It's your arms holding me close, your lips kissing my earlobe, your breath blowing into my ear. "Welcome to eternity, babe," you whisper, and I smile, home at last.
The End
