Snow White watches, enthralled, as the woman dances up on the stage. Coming out to the Festival of Fools had been intimidating, even with the toughest of her uncles by her side, and she hadn’t much enjoyed all the rowdiness initially.
Now, though, her mood was definitely lifting. This woman, this… Esmeralda, was as gorgeous as her name, and five times as talented.
“If she sticks around, you should go and say hello to her,” Snow’s uncle says. His tone betrays his knowledge of his niece’s new-found attraction, making her blush.
“Oh, but I couldn’t!”
“Well, why not?” her uncle demands.
“Because women can’t just ‘go and say hello to’ each other,” Snow mimics her uncle. “There are rules to this sort of thing, and even if she fancied me…”
“Bah! What if? You’re the most beautiful girl in the world!”
“Why, that’s just the thing! I’d look like a child standing beside her.”
Snow’s uncle takes a long look at Esmeralda. “Well, it’s true. I mean, those aren’t exactly apples she’s got in there.”
