When the cloaked figure slips through the waterfall to the cave it conceals, Zelda does not reach for a weapon, nor let her disguise fall. They know each other, princess and guardian, no matter what illusion either of them wears. Impa bows her head - a hint of true deference alongside the fondness, red eyes shining in a stern face. She would stand guard all night if it was required, but Zelda calls her to take her place by the fire like what she is: a true equal, an old companion.
"You'll not be here long," Zelda says. The words have the feel of prophecy as she speaks them.
When Impa replies, as Zelda had known she must, it is without compromise. "You've felt the darkness in the well. You know I must be there to counter it."
"Of course," Zelda says. They both have their roads ahead of them, but for now, Impa lets Zelda rest against her shoulder like she had as a girl, wrapped in shadow, held in the shelter of strong arms. Alone, the dark is dangerous; Impa's presence is a reminder that it can heal, too, and soothe what the sun has burned.
"I'll be gone soon," Impa says, "but I'll stay until morning. Sleep without fear tonight."
Zelda drifts, Impa's heartbeat steady in her ear, not letting herself think of gentle hands or better times or the future she knows she must face. Tonight, she is safe, and not alone. She will not forget it.
