You're smiling tonight. Every eye is on you, but that's nothing new. You always turn heads whenever you enter a room. It's cliche, I know, but every man wants you and every woman wants to be you. Except me. That's another thing that I have in common with the "stronger" gender: I don't want to be you, Blanche. I want to have you, to love you passionately, so passionately that our story will make you forget every other story you've ever told us.

I know that's impossible, but I've never been one to reach for the possible. I wanted to be a teacher who sculpted lives; now, I'm barely a substitute. I wanted to be rich and be able to take care of Ma in ease; we barely make ends meet. I wanted to straighten Stan out and raise our family together. The latter may have happened, but the first is a ridiculous notion if ever there was one.

I want to love you and be loved by you unconditionally. It's another dream that will never happen. But as I touch your arm, your eyes light up, and you laugh, I can pretend that I'm the reason for your smile, for the way your glow lights up the room. And with your eyes beaming up into mine, I can even pretend, for tonight, it's enough.

The End
