Regina sat in the car for a long time.
Henry, who had driven, waited with her.
Regina fidgeted with her wedding ring. She almost asked him to drive back home. She resolved not to fall apart.
Henry, the man they'd raised, held her hand as they went into the building. Regina was lost in her own thoughts, she didn't notice anyone or anything until she got to the room.
Henry went in first.
In the clean, anti-septic corridor she waited.
After what felt like forever and no time at all Henry came out. His eyes were wet his cheeks were puffy.
In the room machines whirred and clicked and beeped. Regina sat beside the bed. She took Emma's hand.
A kid had fallen through the frozen lake. Emma had saved the day, pushed the kid out of the water and onto solid ice. But Emma hadn't been able to pull herself up. By the time she was rescued her brain had been deprived of oxygen for too long. The doctors had explained but the details didn't matter.
Machines were keeping Emma's body alive. Neither science or magic could make her wake up.
Regina said goodbye to her wife. She bared her soul and told Emma she would love her forever.
When finally she went back out to the corridor and told the doctor it was time she was sure she couldn't cry any more. She was wrong. Henry held her.
They clung to each other as the machines fell silent.
