Title: boundary
Fandom: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
Pairing: Alma Coin/Katniss Everdeen
Rating: PG
Setting: Mockingjay
Prompt: Challenge #460, #451 - boundary
Word Count: 200
Summary: They would never understand their love.

Katniss Everdeen and Alma Coin are allies, and nothing more. Her people believe it, because her people believe what she tells them.

They are sheep, and Alma is all too happy to be their Shepard.

They would never guess that when they met, Katniss Everdeen noticed the same cloud of loneliness in their President’s eyes that she knew all too well.

They would never suspect that Katniss Everdeen, their Mockingjay, has see President Coin take off her wig, that she had heard Coin quietly whisper, "The pox epidemic got me, too. I lived. My family wasn’t so lucky."

They would never guess that it was their own President who comforted Katniss after Peeta Mellark's execution, who held Katniss' hand as she cried, who cupped the Mockingjay's face in her hands, who told her that it wasn't her fault.

They would never understand their love. They would never know that Katniss Everdeen, their symbol, their hope, was the only light in Alma’s world.

They would not know how on bad days, Alma’s smile was perhaps the only thing that kept Katniss Everdeen sane.

They would never know anything more than Alma told them, and she would keep it that way.
